Sand pitting? You live near the beach right? Probably not unpainted, but pitted. Small ones won't hurt anything. There's a couple of rustproofing coats on there.

Trying to understand "Sand pitting". Is this result of sand grit hitting the car's painted surface at 60,70mph ? Does this pitting only occur on first several inches of the hood's leading edge ? If so, how many inches are pitted ?

Over time I would presume this pitting will cover 100% of the effected painted surface(s). Hmmmmm -- this can't be good for the XC70 looks.

We get blowing sand pretty regularly on the beach. It's dry, very fine. It can pit the surface sometimes. Looks like white specs. I assume its sort of like sandblasting the surface.

Its random, but if you spend a lot of time at the beach or live near one, you'll see it occasionally. The speed of the wind I am sure is a factor, but it doesn't have to be blowing hard.... a gust at the right angle will do it.

How many thousands of posibilities are there for little micro nics? Many...yes. I just mentioned the sand, since I have had it happen in the past.

I suppose sand and salt air are not good for the car, but its certainly less a problem than salt or other crap on the roads in the rest of the country. The sand is something I'm not sure there is a solution too either.

I had this exact problem, and the dealer re-aligned the tailgate.. it was too far over to the right side of the car.

Also, the tailgate cover is made of fibreglass so the damage will happen much more quickly than had it been made of metal. Reason they make it out of fibre is to make the tailgate easier to open and close... ie lighter.

No, I do not believe it is sand pitting. It looks more like the paint did not cover completely. It is under the clearcoat. I live about 5 miles from the beach and have not driven in any windy conditions. The spots are on top of the hood.
I will show it to the dealer when I go in for my first service, I have 5800 miles on the car now.

Maybe you have the first Polka Dotted Ruby Red XC70. Just kidding yer now.

Seriously though I'd have this paint examined by a auto paint specialist before you charge down to your dealership. The professional paint shop can maybe give you some good advice on what to say to the dealership in order to get the proper attention you're looking for. I'm sure the dealership will try and turn you away as repainting has to be expensive. Is it just the hood panel or is this "pitting look" all over the car's painted panels ?

I recall on my '86 Volvo 745 pointing out a small glass imperfection in the black area of the hatch glass only to be told it should not matter and wouldn't get worse with time and that it was expensive to replace the glass even under warranty. The chip in the glass has never propagated but it bugs me every time I see it.

Uh, I went out to examine my car again and it does seem like most of the spots are on the hood I will try to photograph and post. Unfortunately as I was looking I found one tiny spot that actually must have ben caused by a rock. Tiny dark rough area. The others though are more like cloudy "clear" coat. I will take your advice Barry and check with a paint shop.

P.S. I'm not sure having a unique polka-dot red XC is much consolation

I have a couple of those white spots too. I took the car in and was told that it is the result of small stones hitting the car. The shop helped me with a touch-up paint. Let us know if you get to try a different or more effective solution.
