I just bought my 2001 XC V70 this past weekend. I test drove it for about an hour. No shifting problems at all. It has 168,000+ on it. I will do a drain and fill this weekend

Serial# 01Bx - a none B4 Servo zone.
It is already shifting better. About a gallon (below 4-quarts) drained, and refilled with MOBIL ATF 3309 (12/1qt case $64.19).
Thanks Astro!

My 5AT Geartronic didn't die but at around 70k miles mark, it shows some lag when shifting from R to D and also at times jerkiness when the D engages. Change of transmission oil and flush only works temporarily. Updated ETM not much help too. Finally gotten my indie Volvo guy to go for diagnose. Valve body is the cuplrit. It is the weak link as it was a design fault. So it was replaced with the redesigned valve body that Volvo fitted to '03 vehicles onwards. Now running great and better than new since it is well run-in. The front end has a lot of wear and tear items replaced. It runs like a dream now. Luckily the extended warranty taken care most of the repair bills. I just pay for the consumables like oils.

Don't own an 01/02. Just looking at the poll results...
* more than 70% of 01/02 cars make it from 60,000 to 180,000+ miles without reported transmission problems.
* this is a troubleshooting site... so maybe the failure rate reported here is higher than in the rest of the cars?
So, to me it looks like a 1 in 4 chance of having a transmission die prematurely on the 01/02. Those are bad enough odds that I wouldn't buy one - but on the other hand if I already owned one that's made it 60k+ I might be a little less worried...
Indeed Mac - statistics apply to groups...not necessarily to individuals. I may have a 5% chance of getting cancer...but I will either get it, or not get it. Further, this site attracts people whose cars have a problem, so like you, I don't belive it to be a representative sample of all Volvo XC owners...
As far as the odds on this transmission, I have 2 P2 cars, both got valve bodies at roughly the 110K mark, and both are working perfectly since. While not a statistically significant sample, both made it to over 100K without issue and both are performing well after a minor intervention. No major surgery needed.
You know I will keep you guys informed should that change, but the point is that the trans is fundamentally a good unit, even with the known valve body wear problem, they generally last a long time...most owners (and shops) don't know to intervene until it's far too late...and then you're buying a full rebuild...

What did just the updated valve body cost you Astro?
$500 for the work, nearly $100 to ship to Canada...then about $25 in parts to install, plus fluid. I think it's all the valve body notes in the resources section...

Thanks, I will look it up.
My 5AT Geartronic has its valve body replaced at around 70k miles mark. Now with the updated revised valve body in it, it is running smooth and as good as new.
