Default Fix it before it dies?

I love our 2002 V70XC. Shift flares, harsh shifts, and poor transmission performance led me to attempt rebuilding of the valve body at 125,000 miles. My notes are posted under http://www.volvoxc.com/resources/how-to/

It's hard to know how worn out the trans clutches and bands are before attempting the repair, but in my case, 1,500 miles after the repair, the trans works flawlessly.

The longer the trans is allowed to operate with low line pressure (and poor shifting) the more likely it is to tear itself up internally and require replacement...

Frankly, if an 8 year old car requires several thousand dollars in trans repairs...I am getting a different car...

    Default V70xc awd

Friday August 20,2010, my Volvo odometer turned 200.000 miles.
I purchased it two years ago this coming September. I drive 110 miles roundtrip to work. I puchased it at 120.000. It has been a great car. I replaced the front struts a couple of weeks ago. This morning on my way to work the "check engine" light came on and gave me a P-0422 code.I understand it might be a transmision problem. Any opinions on this?

Have you done any service to the tranny since you bought it?

I believe the technical definition of P0422 is "Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)" I would guess you most likely have a problem or problems with the Oxygen (O2) sensors or the catalytic converter, which would not be surprizing at 200,000 miles

Well i've been reading a few of your comments/replies...
I bought my 2006 2.5t v70 at 58 000km....drove well but noticed that when coming to a stop (in traffic) there would be shudder...so i brought it to the dealer....i had already done a power tranny flush but they said that i needed a valve body job and had to do a softward update...after that it's been running smoothly...luckily it was covered under warranty.

the problem here is not with the tranny but the original software that was installed..as someone mentioned if you get a fluid flush get the tranny reprogrammed (or reset) and it should be good...after all if they use this tranny on toyota's (aisen) why can't it work the same on a volvo
SOFTWARE PROGRAM....so don't know the tranny, it's just following it's program...

BUT this is where i get pissed off...seeing as this has been a problem for many years, why didn't volvo own up to this problem and have resolved it right away ...many years ago...SHAME ON YOU VOLVO!!!

    What are you blabbering about?
EVERY car brand gets software updates all the time for various things.... including shift protocols so Volvo gets tranny updates for EVERY model year all the time, one or maybe twice a year, so what?
    Most brands do these days

My point is that it's okay that they do get updates...it's that for lots of consumers that might not know much about cars, they'de bring it in only after the damage has been done and need a new tranny. Why doesn't the dealership, when lets say a costumer comes in for an oil change, check out in the computer when software package is in there and as the costomer " listen, there is a new update on your tranny to better performace, would you like us to update it"? meaning, don't wait for the customer to ask, the dealer should take initiative. that's my point.

They do when it's under warranty
2001s have had upgrades since 2001, 2002's since 02, etc
If an owner decides (and many do), NOT to have a Volvo dealer service their car, they won't enjoy the free upgrades for the first 4 years when all this damage was done.

06 (your year) was the first year that 4 free services were not offered, so after the 7500 miles free service, who knows how your car was serviced.....if at all!
    Get the point?

Ya i understand....it just sucks, that's all....i got the car with 58000km on the clock and i don' think it was ever checked (upgrade), i've been servicing it at volvo and when it was still under warranty (thank god!) i told them about the wierd clunking noises and they did a program upgrade and ended up having to do a valve body job...i was lucky.

    Post Still Going but Nervous

I'm at 146,000 and still no major problems. Had a software update and flush about 30,000 miles ago and looking to flush again soon.

I have a surge (I think some refer to as a flare??) when the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd. Also sometimes get a clunk at low speeds (usually in 1st or 2nd gear) when I take foot off gas. Based on what I've been reading, these could be the beginning of the end.

Saw a lot of posts from JRL and thinking of trying the following soon: flush, updated valve body, reset adaptations, do the drive cycle. Any more suggestions and are any of these a waste of money/time?
