My 2002 transmission shifts hard from park to drive when warm and stutters when slowing for a red light than becomes green without stopping. Only been doing this for around 5,000 miles and I think it could be the valve body, but my mechanic (25 years experience, factory trained, only volvos) says that no damage is occurring in the trans and that its find. He also says that the trans will say something is wrong when the trans service urgent light comes on. There not out to make money like the dealers and I trust them, but this is kind of frustrating for me. Not going to replace the car, because of its immaculate condition and if I need to replace the trans I will. Any thoughts though as it shifts perfectly in any other condition?

The "trans service light" comes on when the computer senses a fault, or when the fluid has exceeded 150 C for a specified period of time.

But your valve body can be faulty (and you have one of the classic symptoms) without setting the fault that would trigger the light...and the trans may be getting worn out in the interim.

When that service light comes on - it won't be because it's time to service the trans, it will be on because it's time to REPLACE the trans...but nobody works on transmissions any more...they just wait until they're toast, and replace the whole thing...easier on the technician.

    But harder on your wallet.

317,000km and still on the original smooth transmission. Feb 2001 build.
I need a new steering rack though. None available in Australia.

Update on my trans, a adaptation, new b4 servo cover, and a few fluid changes and the unit is shifting very smooooooooth. Next time I do a drain and fill I might try some trans-tune just because I'm curious of what it might do. But otherwise currently I'm sitting at 187,000 miles on a original 02 transmission that shifts just fine.

... I'm only allowed to vote once.

The new tranny has a few thousand miles on it and is doing well. The fluid is looking a bit darker than it should and the shifting is perfect unless it is cold. If it's cold, then the rpm go higher than normal from 1-2 and 2-3.

Then your trans is shifting perfect. It revs higher when cold in order to warm the cat quickly.

2002 V70 XC 193,000 miles on its original transmission. Seems to slip out of third gear if I stay in it for a long time. Goes into drive hard. Occasionally slips when slowing down at an intersection. I'm not expecting it to last forever.

Edit: it's worth noting that it never ever does this when I'm moving with any sort of purpose, it only seems to misbehave if we are cruising around leisurely.

Good point.... I couldn't figure out how to vote but here's my vote So far my 01 which I owned since 05-06 has been great . No problems I did one flush at around 95K miles . We have close to 180K now. I now have a 07 with 112K . I think I will flush but this car was so mint the guy did everything. What mileage to flush do you folks think ?

I flush every 30,000 miles. Perhaps I'm overly cautious. For severe service, Volvo recommends every 52,500 miles.

Pick either one....It's not too late to start....
