The "trans service light" comes on when the computer senses a fault, or when the fluid has exceeded 150 C for a specified period of time.
But your valve body can be faulty (and you have one of the classic symptoms) without setting the fault that would trigger the light...and the trans may be getting worn out in the interim.
When that service light comes on - it won't be because it's time to service the trans, it will be on because it's time to REPLACE the trans...but nobody works on transmissions any more...they just wait until they're toast, and replace the whole thing...easier on the technician.
But harder on your wallet.
