I was combing through my service records and I came up with about $1500/year in mainteance including all the breakdowns, oil changes, check engine lights (lots of those)... flushes, brake pads, tires, wheels, ...This is my average over 5 years. Before this is a little less but not by much.

We've had our 2000 XC70 since it was new, and it's been fairly costly to maintain, although since I've had the car (2008) I've been doing nearly all the minor maintenance myself. My dad was a little disappointed in the car because of the problems we've had for how much he spent on it.

Over the 9 years we've had it, the cost/year has varied. Sometimes just little things, other times stuff like the ABS. So far this year I've spent $40 on the car. A new thermostat, new cabin air filter, and a couple small light bulbs.

Doing stuff yourself saves a ton of $. I just discovered the last time our cabin air filter was replaced was in 2001. It cost my dad $100 at the dealer. Today I replaced it myself in 5 minutes with a brand new high quality filter for $20.

edit: I have an extreme varying cost depending on which Volvo and how many I have for a given year. I did NOT vote...

There probably won't be many people who will be able to answer this question since the cars are 9 to 11 years old. The majority of people will have bought theirs as a used car. A better poll might have been to ask what maintenance costs have been for the past year, or what costs have been over the last 10,000 miles.

binglax, the question isn't how much money has been made or lost, but how much has been spent on maintenance. Two very different questions.

    Hi Everyone..

The cost will probably near about 2500$ for the maintenance of my volvo xc70.
    Thank you.

This, more or less, mirrors my experience for the 10+ years I've owned mine.

    Default long term ownership

I have owned my 1998 V70xc since new (purchased August 1998). The maintenance and repair costs were probably less than $500/yr for the first 100,000 -150,000 miles. It has only been since the car reached 200K that I have had "major" repairs: new turbo at 210K and new drive shaft at 226K. I have always done routine work myself, such as oil and filter changes, spark plugs, etc. I did replace the ABS/TRACS module with a rebuilt unit from Victor Rocha myself as well.
Overall I can not complain about the cost of ownership on this vehicle. My wife and I still love it and it has never let us down in 230K.

As the original owner there have been a couple of big expenses, but as others have said DIY saves you a ton of money.

    2000 XC with 150,000 miles

    Big items:
Dealer timing belt service (shoulda done it myself!) around $2000
Air conditioning compressor $1300 (indy shop)
Bevel gear went at 115,000 miles around $2200 (indy shop)
Propeller shaft bearings 2x at $400

Other than that just regular oil changes, brakes, and lots of little stuff like:
    Antenna ring in the ignition
    Front end links
    The rear hatch kit
    Shifter button repair
    Coolant reservoir
    Front upper shock mounts
    Thermostat

    Nothing too unusual.
