gshadow, i dont understand. are you saying ill be robbed by the dealer? they are way expensive. i know that from servicing my last v50 after the warranty ran out. but i dont seem to have any other alternatives. i dont know of any volvo mechs in my area. and im not savvy enough to mess around the car + i dont have real equipment. i figure since i dont have alternatives, ill splurge this time and try to do as much as i can on my own in the future.

what does "pcv service" mean? and "t/b w/p"?
i dont understand them. im a real newbie here.

    PCV= http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Engi...-1-72-153-849/
    t/b = timing belt
    w/p = water pump

yes, they will rob the hell(most dealers) out of you since stage 0 consist primarily of preventive maintenance stuff. a good long weekend planned out will cover this $1500-2000 dealer retail cost repairs

tools? common hand tools, nothing special except a cam locking tool you can buy from ipd for $40. all you need is a credit card to order all the parts from tasca volvo or ipd or fcpgroton.com for non-oem parts(i'd spend the extra moola for oem)
75-85% of the work and parts for the $1500, where you can do it yourself and BUY all the tools needed and still come out ahead. when i got my first volvo back in 2004. i had the dealer do a pcv cost me $680 because i had a oil leak. boy was i stupid.

now in 5hrs i can get the following done on a fwd 850/ 98 x70
    -timing belt
    -water pump
    -accesory belt
    -both pulleys
    -tensioner
    -pcv system
    -coolant hoses(top and bottom)
    -all new silicone vac lines
    -turbo return gasket
    --turbo return o ring
    -oil dipstick o ring
    -plugs
    -wires
    -distributor cap
    -distributor rotor
    -thermostat
    -ets(engine temp sensor)
    -new t-stat bolts
    -oil change

on a 99+ x70 everything is harder but its still doable.
-xc90 alternator is going to cost $700+ from the dealer, i did it in 2hrs $60 (remanufactured bosch 160amp..buddy hook up price) for the alternator and $55 for the accesory belt
-xc90 brake booster hissing $485 for the part from the dealer and another $35 for labor. Erievovo.com lifetime warranty new-used part $160-2hrs later i was done
-xc90 everything in the steering/suspension changed out $875 in parts(dealer parts) about 4hrs to install

xc90 and the xc70 are going to be pretty much the same labor times and parts cost. if i paid the dealer to install all this stuff, i would own a $13000 150,000 mile xc90. so far, with the cost of aquiring the vehicle and parts i am in for $8100

sounds really tempting. first ill take jims advice and make the timing belt a priority. however it seems to do the tb the car needs to be lifted so that the front right wheel can to be removed to get at something in there? that would mean i need a ramp or a jack other than the one supplied with the car?

yeah front wheel needs to be removed to expose the crank cover that makes it possible to remove the serp belt. so one jack and one jack stand.
    $125 for the floor jack
$40 for a set of jack stands
$100 for a starter set of craftman tool set
    $250ish for OEM parts,
    $40 for cam locking tool.
$0.00 for getting the how-to from here, MVS, swedespeed, volvo-forums, volvospeed ect.

$500ish and you still ahead of the game and have a good start ahead of the next project. even less if you had the tools already all this providing that you trust yourself to do it or if you have someone with some knowledge willing to help you out over a few beers :P

ok. so i dont have an indoor garage and its been dumping snow in my area... it seems working on the car myself for the time being is not possible.
and now back to dumping money on the dealer to get my car to stage 0...
i called the service department of the dealer and asked them about cost to get the car to stage 0 and the guy had no idea what i was talking about. i then ran down the list of things to do per matthews site and the guy tells me a bunch of those things are only for older volvos and not needed for a 99 xc. he says the pcv only exists on older volvos and its not an issue on the 99 xc. he suggested i just being the car in for a standard maintenance.
needless to say this is all very confusing to me as i am just learning about all this. anyone have any idea what i should make of all this?

    Ask another dealer.
He is totally clueless and a dumb sh*t head to boot
If a 99 isn't an older car what the hell would be?

Of course it has a breather (PCV).
EVERY 5 CYLINDER VOLVO HAS A BREATHER BOX SYSTEM THAT GETS CLOGGED OVER TIME.
No dealer will know what a stage 0 means

The man should not be allowed to have this job.

This guy I spoke to is the service Dept guy in the dealership. It did strike me as odd that almost nothing I learned from this forum resonated with him.
Jim, if these guys don't know what stage 0 is then what do I tell them? Just go down the list of what was on the Matthews site? And why wouldn't they know what stage 0 is?

Stage 0 is not a Volvo term, it's an internet term that got coined and is now the norm to advise what to do to have your car running at optimum.

Yes, if you take it there (or any shop) you will need to print out everything then ask them to go over everything on the list.

This can be very costly. It would be adviseable to learn what to look for first, and learn how to check your breather box for pressure (PCV) before you take it to a shop. Most shops, dealers included, won't have a clue how to really check it.
Many have never even done a full breather replacement!!!

However if this is not possible, just print out what you SPECIFICALLY want them to go over.

Where are you located and this is REALLY in the wrong thread.
