Cool First Snow In The Rocky Mountain High

Rocky Mountain National Park & The Peak to Peak Hwy

Well, it is middle of august and we got some crazy weather here in the mile high.
One day its 95 and sunny. The next day its 55, raining, and in the mountains its 30 or colder and snowing.
I wanted a piece of that snow action early so I went to the park on saturday the 16th.
The park rangers closed the road through the park way lower than usual, but i still got some pics of the moutains and the mountain car.

Went off a side road that turns into Old Fall River Road (also closed), a one way gravel road to the top of Trail Ridge.

Back on the main road a few curves from where it was closed, looking to the north.

    Hello down there! ! !

Same hills from the 2nd photo, just a different vantage point

A nice shot of Long's Peak from the west side with fresh powder.

These last 3 are off of whats called the peak to peak hwy.

Heres a nice shot of 3 of our most notable moutains of the area
From left to right: Mt Meeker, Long's Peak, & Mt Lady Washington
Whats crazy fun is that I was on Long's Peak 3 weeks ago and there was no snow on the top.

These 2 are showing off the Indian Peaks Wilderness mountains

Hope ya'll enjoy the pics, it was a nice drive to get them and get up in the high country
Hopefully in the next few weeks the road will open and i can get all the way to the top and take more pics of the new snow.

    Default Love this Pictures

I'm a ski fanatic myself (50+ days most years) up here in the Canadian Rockies. Was down in Salt Lake City on business a week ago (Sept 15th) and headed for the hills to see if there was any snow. No such luck.

Over here in Calgary we have been viewing the tops of the mountains covered in snow since early September. Not quite as good as your mid-August quest!

we wont start getting snow that stays for a few more weeks yet.
but that little spiff was enough for the park service to close the road
gotta keep all the kansas and texes tourists safe i guess

but today my mountains were looking barren today. no new snow
next month however, itll start flying

Nice pictures. I was just looking at people's fun in their cars and saw yours. Just curious, any major problems with your AWD system? I have a 2000 XC-SE, which promptly burned the angle (bevel) gear after I bought it, two years ago. Since then I've just driven it in town, since it's my second car, but I really would like to take up in our mountains here in Wyoming. I guess I haven't been brave enough to face another $3100 repair bill.
    Thanks

i have yet to have issues with the awd. i replaced the driveshaft this summer and got new tires a few weeks ago. im at 161k and it runs great. if you do some searching, one can find threads about replacing the angle gear with a good used one for a lot less than a new one. to prevent that from happening again, keeping the tires wearing evenly is a must or else burnt gears

Yes, I've read a lot of posts and tires seem to be the secret to keeping the angle gear happy.
