Default 2001 V70XC Fuel Pump Replacement

    Hello All,
Just received an extended warranty notice from Volvo covering the possible defective fuel pump in my XC. But it is for cars up to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Wouldn't you know it we just hit 160,000 and the XC is hard starting when hot exhibiting symptoms of fuel pump failure such as gas fumes etc.
Anyone out there ever change out a fuel pump-how tough is it? Details?
    Thanks

Can't help with the pump replacement, but I just got the same extended warranty-on-pump letter today. I dont smell any fuel odors but we do get intermittent "check engine" light for no apparent reason. Just comes and goes. Did yours display the CE light by chance?

Default my dealer rejected to replace my fuel pump yesterday

... they said it's a voluntary replacement only with the odor problem. I insisted that mines might be developing some "delayed/lacking response" occassionally... my definition is sometimes you don't feel like the moment you depress the gas padel, it didn't go instantly, there's a 0.1 second delay.

I had to replace the fuel pump on my Audi when I felt that. So, I'll need to either go to another dealer around town or escalate to the head of service department. FYI: tough situation when that dealership "Crown Volvo at Chapel Hill" is shutting down this Saturday. I might try the one in Cary, NC. Any other advice or success stories out there?

Also, I wanted to replace fuel filter to see if that is part of the cause of that "delay" I was talking about. I've been poking around from different threads, forums, online shopping sites... fail to find a conclusive answer as to what is the correct fuel filter to get. It seems to depend on the chasis #. And I don't know how I can find mines. Any help would be appreciated.

The followings are the most complete set of choices I've found on http://www.autopartsheadquarters.com

    Fuel FilterFrom Chassis 16634 BSH078316
    Bosch
    $28.06

    Scan Tech
    Fuel FilterFrom Chassis 16634 VOL077829
    $33.44

    Mann
    Fuel FilterTo Chassis 16633 VOL084271
    $16.04

    Fuel FilterTo Chassis 16633 BSH062286
    Bosch
    $25.22

There's an useful DIY thread on how to change the fuel filter, it mentions filter size is about 3"-3.5" diameter and about 8" long... no mentioning of the OEM or any preferred aftermarket brand and model #. I see mines still has the Volvo decal on it, don't know if anyone has ever changed it in the past 130k mi.

    Default fuel filter update

Sorry to sidetrack the topic, I still would like to hear more about others' experience with the fuel pump replacement. For now, I'd to add to my last post about fuel filter.

On another site, alleuropeanautoparts.com, I got some interesting fact out of it. If I'm just looking at the Bosch style. There are two kinds, one is skinnier and the other looks like it has a larger diameter. My XC has a manufacturer date 02/2001, maybe I fall under the chasis 16633. Therefore has the skinnier one (as I looked under the Right Rear door).

-- Bosch ? Made in Austria $28.62 (not for me, the larger diameter style, Chassis: 16634)

-- Bosch 0 450 905 908 Made in Spain $25.74 (looks right for me, the longer style, Chassis: 16633)

    Anyone else can verify?

I also got the letter, and had some CEL codes, so I took our 2001 v70 xc to the dealer, but they wanted $125 to check the codes (refundable if it turned out to be due to the fuel pump) so I said forget it and walked out.
My codes, by the way, are p0013, p1332, and p1238, and they seem to come and go at random, and in random combinations.
I don't notice any performance problems, so I'm guessing the codes are due to some intermittent wiring problem.
    Anyone else getting these codes?

my service manager said they did some testing to the fuel pump (e.g. something like check "output pressure") and it's fine... and no codes... that's their primary reason of rejecting the FREE replacement.

Exactly. I wish everybody would understand that.

Well, today I went back again, as I realized that they took my letter after rejecting to change mines. So, I escalated this matter to the general service manager at Crown Volvo. He was extremely helpful and took him about 10 minutes to pull the background of my car via VIN then he called me back and said he has found that my car is eligible for the fuel pump replacement and ETM (electronic throttle module). However, since their dealership at Chapel Hill (where I went) is closing down after today. He printed me a letter and I'll bring it to the one in Cary, about 50 miles away, to get both replace for free.

The catch is the service department at Cary's dealership might go through the same saga if I bump into any service rep that doesn't understand the concept of this particular extended warranty.

BTW, paging JRL here. I thought JRL works for a Volvo dealership... maybe he can offer how his dealership handles this whole fuel pump thing...
