Default Instaling Magnefine Inline Trnasmission Filter

An urgent question to Gibbons and all other forum members who had previously installed a Magnefine Inline Transmission Filter:

Did you merely cut the return line and inserted the filter into the cut ends, or did you remove a section of the return line? If the latter, how long was the cut out section?

    Thanks in advance ... Pierre

Pierre, I did cut out a piece of line, but I don't recall how much. I don't want to tell you something other than what it really was and have you muff the job on my recommendation. Sorry!

I can measure the length from the fitting down to the filter, that all worked out for me without causing kinks and such.

Be prepared, it sounds easy to do, but was a monster given the tight spaces and tight hose hose slip fit. I left massive skin specimens under the hood on that one.

Thanks Gibbons ... I will start with about 2" or so - it easier to cut off more than end up with too short a connection. I will "attack" this with caution - maybe I can limit skin loss and damage ...

    Default Installation

I installed the Magnefine filter yesterday. Removing the air inlet pipe helped to give access to the very confined space ...

I cut the return pipe from the ATF radiator / cooler about 1.5" below the exit bend, just enough for the filter spout and to allow for some bending. I ended up removing only about 1" of the pipe and it is now installed without any sharp bends or kinks.

I used a small ratchet / socket spanner (1/4") to fasten the clamps as it gave more leverage than a screwdriver and helped to keep my hands away from skin-bruising parts ... but even then, I became a "skin donor" as Gibbons had warned ...

Testing the AFT level after driving the car to check for leaks, I noted that the ATF - which I had replaced about 6.000 miles ago at just under 70.000 miles - is still clean. Next replacement will be at about 115.000 - 120.000 miles (180.000 km). PS I used Toyota T-IV and have experienced no problems.

Hey Pierre - I'm going to install mine next week. Did you manage to take any pictures?

Sorry guys I did not during the installation but I will take one or two of the final job and post it.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I did loosen the pipe at the top radiator outlet - the green clips! - and that helped me to pull the pipe out to a slightly higher position to aid the filter fitting to the "bottom half" of the cut pipe - it is a tight fit and it help to work with hands and arms not contorted ... in fact, coming to think of it, I would not have been able to fit the top stub if I hadn't removed the pipe from the radiator, as the only way to fit the filter is to twist it in - as I said, it is a tight fit!

Expect the pictures by Friday or Saturday - I am about 7 hours ahead of US East Coast time so even if I take the pictures on (my) Saturday morning it will still greet you for breakfast.

    Here are the promised pictures:
1 = view from the top showing the return line from the cooler and where I cut the pipe
2 = view of the bottom end, showing the "gentle" curve of the return line - NO sharp bend or kinked line. To achieve this, I removed about 1" of the pipe
3 = overall view of the complete job
Note that the air intake pipe has been removed - if that was still in place, none of these photographs would have been possible

What size filter did you use 1/2, 3/8, or 5/16. They can be purchased at JC Whitney for 30.00. Thanks
