I checked the various tyre specs on miata.net using their tyre calculator.
The 235/50-18 is larger than the stock tyre but still within spec.
Any larger and I fear that the cars performance and fuel consumption will be adversly effected.
I guess that some Bsr software could take care of the performance but fuel consumption is obviously my biggest concern.

How can it increas fuel consumption? Bigger tires = more speed pr rev = lower consumption.

That can be true when the differences aren't too big. But then your fuel savings are that big either.
When the differences in tyre size are substantial (such as what you're suggesting) then fuel consumption will definitely increase.
Wider tyres = more rolling resistance = more fuel
larger diameter = longer gear speeds but less power at the wheels = larger throttle openings to attain same speed = more fuel
this is all relevant if no other changes are being made to the car.
