Default do you use your 3rd row seat?

I'm in the process of buying an '04 XC70 and I found a car and am wondering if it's worth it to have a 3rd row seat installed for a little less than 2K. Do you use your third row seat? It seems like it could be very convenient when the grandparents visit and we could put one of the older kids or two in the back.

Exactly what we've been using it for in the XC and now again in the V70! Not cheap, but very convenient!

The third (backwards facing) seat would be in the crumple zone as well as facing the rear window that would shatter inwards if the car were hit from behind.

It's suitable for children up to age 12.

J - Are you saying that you could be potentially putting children at risk by using the third row seat?

So you're suggesting somehow that the crumble zone know the age of the passengers sitting in the third row and adjusts accordingly

Putting children anywhere in a car potentially puts them at risk.

Being alive is risky In fact, I can say with certainty that none of us will survive.

Seriously, I doubt that Volvo would continue to offer third row seating if there are serious risks associated.

That's not entirely correct. The rear area is designed to maintain it's area. The car hinges/bends at the C pillar to absorb shock. Google for pics of rear ended P2 XC70s.

If you're worried about glass tinting or security film can drastically reduce or eliminate the isssue. It's an issue for the 2nd row seat as well.
