Does anyone know what the bit of plastic over the egg-crate grill is for? (on the right side)

My guess is it's the radar sensor found in Volvo's adaptive cruise control/collision warning system as seen on this S80.

Yes, it’s the radar emitter for the adaptive cruise control/collision warning system.
