The hinge and latch are from the "DIY parts" section of 4xinnovations.com. The rest I fabricated.

Love it! The shovel is a nice touch...
Impressive. What size are those tires? Hopefully cops won't take issue that your plate isn't fully visible. I dunno if that's something that matters to them, probably not.
Rear plate visibility will absolutely garner law enforcement attention. I assume you've got a plate mounting bracket to add on next?
Nice!!!
Yeah, the license plate is my next project. I didn't have time to deal with it, so I just zip tied the plate to the spare. I was rushing to get it done for an off road excursion to Death Valley National Park, which we just returned from. About 570 miles on road and 100 miles off road, and it didn't fall off the car. So, I'm considering that a win
My plan for the license plate is to fabricate a bracket that bolts to the current license plate studs and holds the plate straight to the left of the original location clear of the spare and then run wires from the original license plate light sockets over to some kind of lighting mounted on the bracket (probably a simple LED strip). I'm pretty sure lighting is a DMV requirement.
Here's camp at Lower Warm Springs in Saline Valley. I should have taken more pics, but that's it of the Volvo.

License plate lighting is a requirement in nearly every jurisdiction (or the factory wouldn’t include it). You can get a ticket for that in Florida. Ask me how I know…
Love your work and how you use your Volvo. Any thought to higher rate springs in the rear?
