I am the owner of a 2001 (current model) Cross Country that has a mysterious clunking sound in the rear drive gear.  The sound can be produced by reversing and turning the steering wheel hard to the left or right.  When drive is then selected the same sound is generated by moving forward and again steering hard to the left or right.  Any ideas on what it might be?

The car is also impossible to align (wheels), and particularly the passenger side front.  The car has 45,000 kms on the clock and we have already gone through 10 tyres.

Hi Slacko and welcome to the forums, sorry it had to be due to a problem with you car.  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

We had a strange clunking sound with our car a few weeks ago, and upon discussion with the dealer, they replaced a couple of the control arms, all on warranty.

Hope that helps and keep us in touch with the latest.

Cheers!

Taylor.

These things have so many clucks and clanks that I gave up.
My S60 AWD is pretty quiet.
Volvo still has a long way to go on their AWD's.
