So my little 2001 XC with just over 115k needs a new Catalytic Converter. It's tossing intermittent failures (forget the exact code), but i know the code is referring to the Catalytic Converter not working right and not a sensor being bunk....

Anyway, I've resolved to the fact that it must be done. My local independent volvo repair shop quotes me $1100 for a new one...which I assume is OEM.

My question is the obvious one: Is a cat a cat? IE, can I go to my local muffler shop and have them cut out and replace with a generic converter? I think the OEM has a bunch of pipe for and aft, which I am sure is fine.

I've read people cursing Midas here, so I'll cross them off the list...but the question remains the same :-)

Thanks :-)

You can almost get a aftermarket high performance downpipe for that much. With better throttle response, faster turbo spool, and power increase. :D

When my Cat went out on me at around 100k km, I replaced it with the FERRITA downpipe. [thumbup]
