While replacing the front control arm bushings, I found the right ball joint to be a bit notchy in its feel. Time to replace it obviously. Does anyone have the torque spec on the ball joint to steering knuckle bolts? Thanks!

Hi, saw your post and Had a question..
How did you press the bushing out of the control arms? Did you take it somewhere?

Also did you replace the "roller" in the front?

Pressing the bushings out requires either the Volvo tool, or a hydraulic press. I found many shops that do front end work either don't have a press  or run as soon as you say "Volvo." Eventually, I found an import specialist mechanic (a self-described Volvo geek) who replaced the bushings, and even got them perfectly aligned. He charged $40. [cool2] So, I could have paid the dealer $550 to do the work or paid $168 per control arm to replace the entire control arm versus replacing just the bushings. Instead, I paid $90 for the 4 bushings and $40 for the mechanic. And look at the fun I had along the way;)

I can now report that the car feels more solid, tracks better, and alignment is far better with the new bushings. Renewing the struts made a big difference, but the new bushings have made almost as much of a difference.

Um, I'm not sure what you mean by the roller. Do you mean where the front of the control arm is attached to the subframe with 2 bolts?

Hi VolvoShad

(My Volvo is 2003 XC70 2.5T AWD)

I have seen your post, very knowledgable and helpful.

After prepare for replace my C-Arm bushing, I start my work. But I can not go further more when disconnect the C-Arm off the Ball Joint.

I remove the 18mm nut from the downside bolt of the Ball Joint and push the C-Arm downward, but the C-Arm(still has 3 bolt connected to the Subframe) can not go far enough to let the Ball Joint bolt out of the hole.

I try to use a tension strap lower the C-Arm, still have limited move.

And I wonder is it because the spring is too loose to make the Spring Strut and the whole Hub to low to block the C-Arm go. So I try to shorter the spring and strut with tension strap, but it seems the whole Spring Sturt refuse to shorter even a little.

The procedure I followed is from "How-to guides and tips" of the resouces area this site. But there is a step "Releasing the spring strut from the C-Arm" without any detal info. So I don not know how to. Maybe it is the problem with finish this step.

So could you tell me how to "release the spring strut from the C-Arm", or What I should do to put the C-Arm off the Ball Joint bolt. And any other advise is appreciated.

Now I am trying to remove the whole ball joint off, maybe help, but do you know the torque for the two bold screw it to the hub?

And I only jack the car up from front right with other 3 wheel on the ground, making the front not level, will this hurt the car or cause the problem I meet?

Thank you very much. Waiting for any info.

Howard
