I pulled the grill off the rear D pillar speakers in my XC70. I wanted to examine the speaker to see why the rear speakers sound so bad when you turn the fader control so that only the rear speakers are working.

I could not get over their small size. No wonder they don't sound very good. By contrast the speakers in the front doors sound much fuller.

Anyway can anyone tell me if the original speakers are 4 ohms? When I get some more time, I will measure the clearance behind the grill to see if an aftermarket 3.5 or 4 inch replacement speaker would fit without major surgery. Has anyone changed these D pillar speakers?

I installed CDT Audio tweeters in my 01 XC in the rear "D" pillars and was very pleased with the outcome. I needed to adhere the tweeters to the plastic tweeter supports with an adhesive called "Goop". I have also replaced the front tweeters with the same CDT Audio tweeters and CDT Audio crossovers in the front doors. The biggest improvement can be made by installing an image enhancement tweeter kit (CDT AUDIO) in the location of the front center speaker. I had to make some custom aluminum mounting plates to secure the tweeters, but it seems to very well work. CDT Audio has simply the best sounding speakers and crossovers on the market! The best thing is to add the Volvo subwoofer to really improve the sound system. I wish the subwoofer would have separate control like most aftermarket decks offer. I found by adding acoustical sound deadening mats to the door panels behind the speakers, it seemed to reduce annoying creaks and rattles in the vehicle, while improving the sound quality.

The sub has a gain knob on the speaker housing
