Hi ,

There are lines going accross the two rear side windows of my MY05, there is a logo as well : "Volvo Guard" .
What are they for? I thought they were like defrosting elements, but they do not seems to do anything !!!

Thanks.

I just got a 2006 SC70 two weeks ago and found that those lines in the side windows are in fact defrosters and work just as does the defroster in the rear window. However I found out the other morning that the left side works and the right side does not. Will have to take back to dealer and have that checked out.

It is the antenna of your radio.

Thanks for the info.
Why is it called Volvo Guard???

VolvoXC.com is a cool website!!!

I don't believe the "Volvo Guard" label is meant to refer to the antenna. It is a reference to the car's alarm system.

I believe Volvo Guard refers to the alarm system.

If I am not mistaken, the small wires in the rear side windows are glass break sensors.
Only if the car is equiped with the Volvo burglar alarm (Volvo Guard) do they have a function.
The larger wire in the left window is the radio antenna.

Spot on Willy - they are not defrosters, the simple loops are sensors and the larger one in the left is one of the radio antennas (the other is in the rear bumper - at least it was in my 2002 V70)

This is what I like about this site and I stand corrected in my assumption that those wires are defrosters. The reason I reached this incorrect conclusion was that when we had the first morning when there was frost on the windows, I switched on the rear defroster for the first time since getting my XC70. The rear window quickly defrosted, but it also appeared that the left rear window also did the same, but not the right rear window.

It makes sense that they would not be defrosters, since you only need those on the rear window. But it sure looked as if the right rear window was also getting defrosted.

I didn't know there is/was a radio antenna in the bumper. Could it be that this
antenna is for something different such as remote control (Homelink)?

I know that the optional reverse sonar sensors are in the back bumper contained in those little circles. Found out the other morning with frost on the car that frost on those sensors causes them to beep without the car being within three feet of an object.

Are we sure that none of those wires on the side windows are defrosters? I thought the antenna was at the top of the windshield, where it is on my wife's S80.

The small loop with the word's Volvo guard are sensors that detect a breakage of the glass. My XC70 came with the optional tinted tempered glass.

Quite sure about the antenna, see attachment.

Yeah, it's a loop antenna for the radio. [thumbup]

The Volvo Guard stickers on my 2002 look suspiciously like "The Red Hand of Ulster" and I'm wondering if that's why I get curious looks from closet (and not-so-closet) Orangemen. :D

The other antenna in the bumper forms part of a dual diversity antenna system for FM reception. Antenna signals are increased by amplifiers located under the side panel in the cargo area as seen in Willy's PDF.
