Critical brake pad wear

I've owned several Peugeot autos since 1970 and each had brake pads with a grounding wire embedded. This wire becomes exposed and makes contact to the brake rotor when the pad wears down to a critical remaining thickness. When this happens and the brakes are being applied the electrical brake pad wear indicator circuit starts to flicker a warning light in the driver's dash display. I've always thought this was a useful safety feature and a means of avoiding costly rotor repairs/replacements.

Has anyone any knowledge of this brake pad wear option being provided as an after market mod for Volvos ?
