I was hoping to add 134a freaon to the system as the cooling air seems not cool enough. Attachment with bottle wouldnt engage schrader valve. Is there a secret to this?

Yes and NO! First I wouldn't recommend you recharging your A/C yourself, since some R134a mini bottles have flammable chemicals inside. some state they dont, but how would you know? Second, you have to monitor the pressures as it charges. If you want to keep you system running great, Recovery, vaccum and recharge is the proper way to service your system. And you might also have to add PAG oil.

schrader valve, well you have to turn the mini bottle and ill engage. Only way, not to mention some R134a might release into the air (EPA wont like) while you turn that bottle.

The good part is, it saves you a lot of money just to add a bottle yourself. But I wouldn't.
