xc70 starting problems

We own a 2003 xc70 that periodically won't start and ocasionally makes a grinding noise on ignition. Volvo have not been able to fix the problem despite a few attempts and we would like to know if anyone has any ideas or has experienced similar problems.

What engine ?
Sometimes when starting it is as if my D5 only has 4 cylinders. Mostly this happens when I don't crank long enough.

Does it crank (turn over nicely) when you try to start it, or is that grinding noise you mention something that accompanies a barely turning over engine? If its not readily turning over I suggest you have the battery checked out.

Mine is cranking allright, but whenever I let hold of the ignition key to soon one of the cylinders doesn't want to play ball.
