Trailer Hitch Installation

I have a 2004 XC70 and we want to install a hitch to tow a jetski and trailer. Has anyone installed one themselves? The hitch seems easy enough - no drilling 1hr install time. Worried about the electrical for brake lights, any advice/experience? Volvo wants $1000 to install!!!!!!! :eek:

You're right, an aftermarket hitch is an easy install. I believe they are all 1 1/4" receivers, but should work for anything the car can tow. You should be able to find the factory trailer harness online for less than $100. For instance:

I installed the Hidden Hitch but haven't done the harness since so far we only use it for bike racks and such.

In the trunk area, somewhere near the spare wheel, you will find a connector for the hitch, it has to be wired through a hole in the bottom of the trunk (rubber sealed)
The connector layout can be seen in the drawing (bottom left).
When a trailer is connected, extra turn indicators will light up on the dashboard when you turn, indicating the lights of the trailer work (based on current flow).

The factory wiring harness from vparts is the way to go. Vehicles MY05 and newer require an additional adapter module (http://vparts.autowebaccessories.com/store/volvo-xc70-v70-trailer-hitch-module-prod126_172_12186.php), which they also sell.

The Hidden hitch install was a breeze. Took me less than an hour to re-install it on my '06 after having removed it from my '01 before trading it.
