Is it recommended to have service for your car done at an authorized dealer assuming the problem is not covered by any warranty? Does it depend on the problem? Thanks!

I recommend you bringing it to a experience volvo specialist independent shop or the dealer. Having a professional knowing where everything goes and how it works is better to have the service done correctly with quaility.

I also strongly recommend an independent shop specializing in Volvo.

The problem with a lot of smaller/older independents is they haven't invested in the VARDIS hardware and software needed to work effectively on these cars. Thus they are great on brakes or similar "mechanical"issues but not on those involving the electronic elements (and that's a lot on these cars). I love my indy. He could take my 240 apart and reassemble it blindfolded...on my 99XC he has been struggling and the dealer has had to be my source for a lot of the work. For me you need a good dealer or a Volvo Independent who has invested in the tools needed and has significnat experieice with the newer (99+) Volvos.

In my opinion, Tgrumaj has very well described the realities of post '99 Volvo maintenance.
