Hello all. I just picked up my new XC70 3 weeks ago. I love everything about the car, except the excessive brake dust. Will this lessen over time? Will aftermarket brake pads void the warranty, and what wheel cleaner is most safe to use? Someone told me to wax the rims, will this do the trick?

I suggest you take a look at topic Brakedust (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=1093;hl=dust) and/or do a forum search on "Brakes AND dust".

There's been much discussion on this subject so you're not alone with your concern about brake dust deposits.

A lot of questions... Will it lessen over time? No, unless you install 3rd party pads such as Mintex or PBR. Waxing the wheels will help. Will aftermarket brake pads void the warranty? As far as I know, no. Best wheel cleaner? Eagle One* A2Z. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

waxing will make almost no difference.
the key to getting off brake dust without using acidic chemicals is to wash the car frequently. I wash once per week and can all the break dust off with a soapy rag. On the rare occasion that I have to wait long enough for the dust to harden, I use a commercial non acidic wheel cleaner from Production. I do have drip marks on the wheels from my wife trying to be nice & washing the car & using the wrong stuff and thus burning the wheels, so be careful.

As to your question of time, I have only used Volvo brake pads, which were changed once at the dealership; they have never reduced in amount of dust.
