This is std feature that alerts you to the fact that it's time for an oil change (or, hopes your dealer) time to go in for the regular 7500 mile service. It shows up for a few minutes after each start and then goes out. Do a search on this board and you can find a few tricks to make it go away. The approach varies by the year of the car. With my 99 it's pretty simple and involves the key postion and holding in the trip reset button. The other option is take it to a dealer or independent garage and they can reset.

The "Service Light" comes on for a few moments after startup to let you know its time for your 7500 mile service. It will also come on after a set duration of time. Go here to turn off the light: http://www.v70xc.com/resources/how-to/pdf/xc_sri_reset_procedures.pdf

my car is a 2001 Xc and I have 45000 miles on it. Do you think that could be the brake pads?

No. The light is only for the 7500 mile service interval. Your brakes should be inspected at the service.

Depends on the service intervals. Each oil change at the dealer or repair shop, technicians must inspect brakes, top of all fluids, lights, wipers and more.
