I just read that the next S80 will come with a new I6 engine with 238 hp (as well as the V8 from the xc90).

Anybody know if this I6 will replace the 5 cylinder turbo in the current xc70? And if so when?

My mouth is watering... can some say trade-up.

Thanks for any info.

My guess, new I6 will replace T6 at XC 90 (see soon in London auto show)

Its also going to be seen in the next generation Freelander (LR2 in the USA) also to be announced at the London Auto Show.

Ford have announced a new Focus 4x4 built on the P2 platform???? seems like our XC50 is alive and well and kicking under the Ford brand name, just like the Freestyle was masquerading as the new XC70. Guess it will have all the new engines as well including the 2.3 & 2.4's

George,

I probably wouldn't get too excited about this new I6 engine. Going on some of the threads on the new S80 volvospy forum, where some European volvo sites apparantly have some performance data for the new S80, the new I6 engine isn't that great compared with the T5. Yes it has more power and much the same torque, but being a non-turbo engine that torque doesn't appear until latter in the rev range.
As a result, the 0-100kph (or 0-62mph) numbers aren't that much better than the T5 (and we are talking here about the new S80).
I apologise I don't have the links to go to, but just do a google on volvospy and go to the newS80 forum.

Hope this helps
Tony

New I6 has considerably higher HP and considerably lower peak torque than current XC70 engine. That means higher RPM operation and likely means lower torque at low RPM.

The current XC70 engine torque is very high for the displacement and flat from 1500 - 4500. Volvo has developed the I5 to much higher levels than I thought possible years ago.

The I6 sounds like an excellent engine. However, it almost certainly would provide not much better acceleration than the current engine. 6p GT transmission would help, of course, especially with narrower torque range.

I think a twin turbo I6 V70 AWD -- well over 300 ft-lbs and HP -- would be a very nice car.

Oh gee...its got haldex, volvo/ford engine, all the prototypes and final pre production units are running around on xc90 wheels....

btw the six is a 238hp I 6, 3192cc as in the nextgen s80 and this I'm think is a photo of it.

The engine should probably fit. I read it is only 3mm wider than the current 5. And finally Volvo scrapped the belt cam drive and resorted to chain drive. Bravo Volvo.
