how do you access the fuel pump on the 98 XC? I assume it is under the seat?

I believe, but am not sure, that on an AWD '98 you need to drop the fuel tank to replace the pump. It wouldn't be a quick project....

No access hole from the top. The pump and right side fuel level sender unit are combined and actually mount to the front side of the tank. There is also a level sender on the left side, which is similar in appearance. To properly remove the tank also requires dropping the entire rear suspension/differential unit and the tank together. It is quite involved. If carefull, the system can be unfastened and lowered "just enough" to access and replace the pump. There is an access hole under the cargo floor for the wiring and fuel filter access.

Yeah fuel pump usually are located inside the fuel tank. It's a pain in the butt. I love the old volvos better, pump and filter located in same location.
