I plan to use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil, in my 2005 XC90 AWD.
Since Mobil 1 guarrantiees 15,000 performance before the next oil change. It could be possible to change oil every 15,000. And change only oil filters every 7,500 miles (per MFG recommendatios)

http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Extended_Performance_10W-30.aspx

I saw on the XC90, the oil filter is attached on the bottom of the engine, such way, if the filter is removed, while oil is still in the engine. The entire oil may drain through the opened filter.

My question is. Is that possible to change just the filter, without having to drain the oil first?.

On the 740 & 960 is possible. But I am not sure about the XC.

Sorry, you must drain the oil before removing the filter. You can always save the oil to put back but the warranty requires oil changes at least every 7500 no matter what oil is used.

Mostly all Volvo engines oil filter is at the bottom next to the oil pan. There will be a bit oil left at the oil filter, however there will be no oil pressure throughout the oil change. So just have a quart of Mobil One ready on hand, after chaning the filter 7,500k, double check oil level.

No paper work on oil change! No body knows! So keep on using the Mobil One oil prior to 15k oil change. But I recommend you using 5W30 instead, it wont break down as fast as 10W30 which makes more senses to me with 5W30 instead of 10w30 with 15k oil change.

Cheers.

Thanks for the input.
I live in CA, where the weather in mild. The manual recommends to use 10-30 grade for our region. I think the 5-30 is more suitable for states like Nevada, or death valley, where temratures in summer reach 135F.
Besides, I have been using this grade on my 96, 960 Volvo, since I got it new. 100K miles later, and no problem so far.

Big,
You may be right as far as warrenty is concerned.

I always thought that 10W30 is heavier oil then 5W30 and should be used in the areas where temp. is higher, and 5W30 should be used when it is cold. As per manual, the 5W30 should be used when temp. is up to 86 deg., and 10W30 used if temp reaches above 86 degrees.
Is this right or not?

The oil may be good, but the contaniments will still be in the oil and causing damage. For extended changes you will need a external filter to slow filter the oil to get the junk out. Just because the oil is still in good shape, it doesnt mean that that is so much gunk mixed with it that this will not harm the motor.

Saving $300 in oil over the life of the engine, is hardly worth having to replace a worn cam or having the warrenty denied. Even if you do it yourself you will need to save the reciepts for the oil and filter as "proof". They wont belive you if you say you replaced it.

I just looked at spec for Mobil web site for spec for both grades. 5W-30 & 10W-30.

For mild climates, there are not much big diference between the 2 grades.

(in the 60's, some bravehearts use to stick a roll of toilate paper in the oil canister, in their trucks. I understood it filtered the oil as good as any filter).

Hi guys,

Strange thing is that in US you have to do oil change every 7500 miles. In europe we have oil change intervalls of 30.000 km on the same engines/with same oil.

Never had an explanation from Volvo why. Anybody have a glue?

Volkswagen even have intervalls of 65000 km, so 7500 miles sounds a little short to me.........

With the extended milage, how is the time extended?
