View Full Version : Upper engine mount failure on '05 XC70
I have been feeling vibrations in the steering wheel and seats for a few
month. I reported it to the dealer in my last routine service (15K), and
they said this is normal characteristic of XC70. Well, last night I did a
search for vibrations here and found people mentioning the upper engine
mount failure. I immediately went to check for mine and sure enough the
rubber bushing in the mount is torn. I guess the dealer didn't even bother
to check it. What I don't understand is that why Volvo is still using the weak
mount when an improved version is already available? Maybe '06 is now
using the new mount, I don't know. Anyway, I just want you to know that
the old mount can fail at a very early age under normal driving condition.

From the pictures I've seen of the early and late versions it looks like my '05 has the new one.
What is your build date? I think mine was made in March '05.
I bought the car in November of 2004. Hmm, so the same model year doesn't
mean the same build.

I saw an July 05 purchased XC70 with the new motor mount. My 01 V70 T5 has different fuel filter from later build of the same model year. So mid year changes definitely happens at Volvo mannufacturing. Based on reading forums + dealer requesting for chassis numbers, the transmission software is also changed in between model years.
FWIW, Vadis lists a part number change at chassis number 123000. My chassis is in the 198000 range. There are no diagrams of the change.

Where to find the chassis number? Thanks!

I believe they are referring to the last 6 digits of the VIN when they refer to chassis number.

It's part of the vin. left rear door.
The dealer replaced the bad mount with the new version today. The
vibrations are lessened but are still there. Oh well, I guess I'll just have
to live wit it.

I don't know about that, if vibrations can be cured, it is always better. Perhaps there is something wrong with the (balance of) the tyres.
My XC has no vibrations whatsoever.

Sorry I wasn't clear. The vibrations can only be felt when the car is stopped,
so they must be coming from the engine. Note that the vibrations only
started a few month ago, which is why I don't think this is normal
characteristic of this car.

Is this a curse
Every time I read about a new problem, my car has it also.
Today I checked the oil. Because I was reading about the upper motor mount, I looked at it and of course, the rubber is broken in two different areas.
Question: After Volvo replaces the worn motor mount, how long does it take to brake again. Has anybody had it replaced twice?

Well, how about 3 times? I think that's what happened to some members
on this forum. I guess those replacements are all old design, meaning they
are bound to fail again.

I don't want to add any confusion, but I wonder about the VIN numbers as an indication for the type of mount: my VIN is in the 129xxx range, indicating the new mount should be there. However, comparing the mount in my car with pictures posted here of the new and the old one, it is the latter!

Same here. Mine is in the 17xxxx range, but yet the mount is old design. So,
forget about the chassis number, the only way to be sure is to look at the mount.
