Hi All,

Newbie checking in.... New to Volvo's, but not to European cars and definitely not to cars in general. The wife picked up a really nice blue 01 XC70 AWD with only 49K on it over the weekend. Car has been well taken care of. Anyway, I prefer (and enjoy) to do my own work whenever possible, and in the near future I see a complete tune up and fluid change for the wife's rig.

I know that the XC uses a cartridge type filter (no problem there) but can someone tell me the size of the wrench needed to get the cap off? I have a cap filter wrench I use on my Jetta TDI, but I'm not sure it is the correct size.

Also, for those who do their own maintenance, where do you get parts, at an on-line source (recommendations please), or at the local auto parts store?

Thanks for any info. Looking forward to learning a lot from the forum, and contributing useful info when I can.

Both ipd and fcp groton are the great online part sites for Volvo.

The o-ring on the filter housing will come with the new filter cartridge. Be sure to order crush washers as they are often not included with the filter cartridge.

Glenn,
I just got my wife's 2005 XC90 (5 cylinder AWD), with 28K miles on it. Today I had the oil & filter changed at nearby gas station. (Brough my own 10-30 Mobil 1 oil and filter).
Labor cost only $15.

You should be able to use those belted tools to remove the oil filter.

In regards to where to buy the oil filter. For the next year or two, I would rather pay few dollars more and buy them from the dealer. Normally the after-market industry catches up with the specs of the OEM parts, at much cheaper prices.

I also have a local trusted mechanic shop who repairs only swedish cars. Most often I buy the same parts at much cheaper then the dealer himself.

That said, it's been a while since I have bought one from them, since I bought a six-pack of the OEM cartridge filters on eBay for less than I can get them locally, and without the drive to the dealership. Here's a link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/lot-of-volvo-oil-filters-S40-S60-S80-V70-XC70-XC90_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33661QQihZ006QQite mZ160005609529QQrdZ1) to an example of an eBay auction for the filters.

Best of luck, and welcome to the group.

Thanks Todd,

I went to the link and bought 4 filters for $17.99. That should be better than dealer pricing I hope. Thanks for the tip , I'll get the crush washer from the dealer.
