SRS indicator light

On my 2000 XC the SRS indicator light stays on at all times. The nearest Volvo dealer is 60 miles away. What might explain this and is there a fix without major expense?

The SRS light on our '03 XC70 went on during the warranty period. The cause was a contact ring within the steering wheel that was not making good contact and it was replaced by the dealer at no cost. I love generally being a DIY'r but I stay away from the SRS system.

Never work on SRS systems unless you are trained. Airbag systems have backup voltage module which in case the 12v battery goes dead(actually some have two backups) The airbag will still able to deploy.
