What are some of the more common reasons for this?
Getting it check out Friday AM but would like to know what I can/could expect?

The check engine light, aka MIL (malfunction Indication Light cane come up on a number of occasions, mostly but not exclusively when errors in the emission guarding systems occur. The list of possible causes for the MIL to light is very extensive, the specific code is read by connecting the car to Vadis. It can be a simple thing such as a leaking seal on the filler stop, it can also be something more serious such as a faulty sensor.
The pdf is what the Volvo manual says about the MIL in general:

In my experience the most common & fortunately least expensive cause is failing to put the gas cap on tightly after a refill. If the gas system is not air tight the check engine light will soon come on. Of course there are a host of other potential causes.

Forgot to mention: if it is something not lasting, such as the filler cap that wasn't closed completely, the MIL will be turned off, but possibly only after a number of restarts of the car.
