View Full Version : Wood You Shift?

My XC has a nice leather shifter but I've had sort of an obsession with having a wood one that matched the fake wood trim.

Does anyone know if this is available for my year and how much it costs? Is it a DIY or should I have it installed? Is it any good or does it look cheap? The Volvocanada site says it is available but there is no photo or cost, just to check with the dealer.

Any input is much appreciated; I've mentioned it enough times that I think my wife may be looking at putting a shifter under the tree! [bigsanta]

If yo find one let me know! I have seen several custom shifters for manuals but none for automatic. I had a wood one for my 98 XC but they changed the shifter just enough that it wouldn't transfer. Bummer.

I looked through VADIS and don't see a wood shifter listed for the V/XC70. It lists a couple for the S80's but there are no knob part numbers common to both the 70 and 80 so I can't say if the 80 knob would fit. Might be worth making friends with your dealer's parts folks. See if they have an example from each car to compare.

My dealer advised that the S80 gear selector lever knob will fit on the V70XC/XC70.
Part no. are as follows:

Patina Birch 9204 057-3 (more yellow than what we have)
Claret Red Walnut 9204 058-5 (The same as the wood trim that came with the XC70 stock)

I think JimFisher Volvo has them listed on their XC70 accessories website:

This is the Patina Birch, the color is more yellow than the Claret Red Walnut.

This is the Claret Red Walnut, as seen on a XC90. (But the walnut doesn't really match the XC90's Genuine Wood inlays...)

what's the cost of the part?
is this an easy self install or does it involve taking the console apart?

Just a word of advice on retrofitting the shifter. Might want to check with your dealer before ordering one as some shifter handles are made of regular plastic and are not finished in leather. I had an aluminum version installed and was a bit disappointed that the grip was not wrapped in cowhide. :(

Removing the shifter involves several steps the first of which would be to remove the lock bracket from the gear shift knob. For anyone wishing to follow through with it, I can provide a PDF on request. :)

UDATE: Those instructions have now been uploaded to the Resources How-To-Section (http://www.volvoxc.com/resources/how-to/index.php) of the website along with a few new submissions.

and so has the shifter.

I ordered what I believed to be the Claret Red Walnut Shifter listed by ifnt420 (9204 058-5) but that part number now is changed to 8671 050-6 which is not a good thing. The Volvo parts site calls the color of the new part Claret Red Walnut but it is more a plain brown walnut...no red in it at all. And the grain is different than the grain in my '02 XC. The final nail in the coffin is that the diameter of the base of the shift handle is larger than the opening of the leather boot and for that matter the lock ring that holds the leather boot in place. I guess the boot might be stretchable enough to fit around the larger diameter but given the other issues I didn't even try.
So unless you can find the old part number somewhere don't bother trying this shift knob for the XC70 any more.
