No skiracks for V70 1999 cargo racks (XC type)

Hi from Norway.

I recently bought a pair of cargo racks for my V70 R AWD 1999. Volvo part number for the racks is 9483 630. Both the Norwegian and the Swedish accessories catalogue for 850/S70/V70 2000 states that there is a series of extra equipment for mounting onto this type of cargo racks, for example ski racks (part number 8624 196, page 17 in the Norwegian catalogue).

I have investigated this "case" via the Volvo dealer Helmia Bil AB in Arvika in Sweden (they have been talking to the factory in Gøteborg). Summary of a series of phone calls: there is NO type of ski or bike racks that can be installed onto these cargo racks..!

Have some of you XC guys out there any tips or good news from the US accessories market?

PS: It's snowing in Norway this week. I think we've got 30 cm in two days...

Snow looks awesome. http://volvoxc.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif The shape of your load bars looks quite similar to the rectangular ones that I have although it appears that yours may require the adapter kit (T-track) for attaching the rack accessories.

Hi, thanx for your answer.

None of these listings on the web contains products that will fit onto the Wing profile cargo racks for the XC.

I have forwarded this forum information to my friend at Helmia Bil AB in Arvika in Sweden today. He states that none of this extra ski-equipment fits onto the cargo racks for the XC (Wing profile), even though all catalog listings states that these combinations should be possible (both on the web and in the printed catalogs).

He will make a new phone call to the factory next week to discuss this issue with a product specialist there.

I will be back with new information to the forum later next week.

PS: I am the only person in the world with this type of car trying to mount an original cargo rack for XC for carrying my ski- and snowboard equipment..?

My '98 has the same wing style. I just didn't know it was called a wing style. I'm looking for a bike rack as well but won't need it for a while but having a source now would avert many problems in the future. Please keep us posted. Or at least keep me posted.

Dear Volvo-friend.

If you read my posting from the beginning you will see that I have been investigating this issue very extensively.

I have had several discussions going with a Volvo dealer in Sweden, which again have had several discussions going with an aftermarket specialist at the Volvo factory in Göteborg. Their conclusion is that there is no skiracks which will fit on top of the original XC cargo racks (wing profile, see my pictures down under).

My last contact has been with a sales executive at Thule in Sweden (www.thule.se). They have checked with their engineering department, and they told me that there's no skiracks from Thule that will fit right on the Volvo XC cargo racks.

I will personally go to a store that deals with the Thule rack equipment and try the SnowPro 748 Uplifted skirack (http://www.thule.com/templates/THULE_ProductPage.asp?id=61833). I think they will fit my cargo racks, but time will show.

I will be back with a report on the issue later.

Here's the solution:

After several discussions with Helmia Bil AB in Arvika in Sweden, Volvo Sweden and Thule Sweden, where they all told me that there is no equipment that will fit the XC cargoracks, I had to investigate this issue myself.

With good help from some nice sales personnel at the store www.bilextra.no in Ørsta, Norway, I found that the Thule Snowpro 746 (and 745 and 748 Uplifted) fits perfect to my cargoracks. I have mounted the Thule 746 on my car. "Nice price" in Norway at the moment approx. NOK 550.

As you can see from the pictures below the skiracks from Thule just fits perfect onto the original Volvo V70 1999 XC cargoracks.

Just a note about wing profile bars. Yours are not wing profile. Wing profile are about 3" wide and have a slot down the middle for "T Track" mounting accessoriies. Your bars will accept most of the Volvo racks without modification.

PS Volvo racks are made by Thule. They offer one identical to the one pictured above. But you will pay more. (At least in the US)

Considering buying these cross bars on eBay. What is a good bike and kayak carrier for it?

Depends on what you want to spend, how many bikes you want to carry and how you want to hold the bike. Both Yakima & Thule products will fit. I prefer holding bikes by the tires, rather than removing the front wheel and holding them by the forks. The Thule Sidearm and the Yakima King Cobra are both outstanding.
