I noticed this little thing in front of the rear lights for the rear passengers. Does anyone know what is it for?

It's in all the years, no particular function that I am aware of but I think it might have had something to do with a dog guard/fabric protector that fits accross the front seats.

On the loaded '05 XC70 I have, there's a perforated spot up by the front map lights that looks like a either a microphone or sensor of some kind. I thought it might be a pre-wired mic for some optional bluetooth package.

Any ideas?

Just a retainer clip for the headliner. Twist 1/4 turn to remove.

That it is just a clip would surprise me, car manufacturers know how to attach headliner without visible retainers for quite some time. If the headliner needs extra retainers, it would have been easy to incorporate it in the reading-lights assembly so it wouldn't be seen.
Without being sure, I think a sensor of some kind is more likely, but it doesn't mean it is there in every car!
