Hi guys !

Is it OK to use the Geartonic in 1st gear to pull a trailer/boat (2500 pds) from the water ?

Thanks,
Marc

Assuming you don't race up the ramp I would assume the 1st gear would be selected by the automatic anyways -- so using Geartronic manual mode to hold gear in 1st would not make any difference.

Why do you ask ?

Just leave it in drive. It is smart, it will know the car is under a load and stay in first anyway.

As a matter of fact, 1st gear is the only gear you would want to use. If the ramp is slippery, don't use W mode if you can help it. The W mode does not supply enough power and you may just sit there. -Dick

Hi SnowXcrazy,

I tow a boat/trailor which is 1260 kilo (about 2800 pounds) on a regular basis with my XC. I started off shifting into first when pulling from the water but I now I leave it in automatic and let the volvo smarts do their thing.

The only time I use tiptronic is if I am towing down a long hill and want to use a little engine braking.

P.S. The XC tows extremely well.

Cheers
Neil
