View Full Version : How fast does the D5 XC70 actually go ?
Have anyone been able to test the top speed of this car ?
(Maybe someone from Germany) ?
Kim
My US specs MY04, 2.5T, autom., (gas, no diesel) shuts off at 190 km/h (~120mph). My Volvo dealer here is not able to remove speed limiter. Software is not accepted by the car.
Tnx for the reply hd70 :-)
One of the reasons I'm asking is that someone @ Volvo Norway told me it would actually outrun the 2.5T @ top speed:-)

No, it won't. Factory specs are 200km/h for the D5 (manual gear) and 210km/h for the 2.5T (limited)
If you really need speed, you can install a RICA chip for the D5 and have the limiter removed by them (they do this). This should get you up to 215km/h with the D5. Be aware of warranty/insurance/legal problems though...

Last November I put the pedal to the metal on my D5 Geartronic. Indeed in (southern) Germany, on a completely empty autobahn. 205 kmh on the speedo was the limit. Up to 190 kmh no problem. Thereafter speed slowly climbed to 205.

so, is 205 kph considered adequate in Europe? I've done as much as 250 kph in Germany (as a passenger) and know that people like to drive fast where the speed isn't posted.
sounds like harrynato reached an actual horsepower limit, and not an imposed limit by the processor.
i wonder if the petrol version will do more - i don't know the power rating of the D5.
and I wonder if the V70 has a higher speed cap, as it is probably more stable at high speeds with its lower ground clearance and lower aspect ratio tires.
I lived in Germany for five years and and while there are some sections of the autobahn that do not have a posted speed limit, the German government says the max limit on the autobahn is 130 kph. If you're driving in excess of this speed and are in an accident or cause an accident, you could get a hefty fine; have your license suspended; or be charged, tried, and maybe imprisoned, and your insurance company likely would not pay any claims. However... that doesn't seem to detract some drivers from "flyin'" down the "bahn"; I even did it on occasion but I found that anything above 160 kph is a little bit too fast for my liking. I happen to think that 205 kph is more than fast enough for the European highways. Where I lived (in Stuttgart) the autobahns were overcrowded and the speed limit ranged from 80 kph - 120 kph.

2.5T BSR PPC. 220 km/h, and the engine had some more power, that I did not want to use.
And in the 180-220 km/h area some BMW 5er tried to race (err, what's coming? a volvo? err, i will show this volvo... ohh a VOLVO??), but had no choice.

XC70Geo, you are my new hero.
Man, I wish I still had the cojones to do that kind of speed, but old age makes one cautious.
That and the bad karma that got me a big fat ticket the last time I managed over 150.

205 km/h adequate???
I used to do this kind of things with my Saab 9-5 Aero, but in fact it's silly. The slightest problem (e.g. someone else at 120km/h making an unexpected lane change) can kill you. There are some stretches in Germany (e.g. between Potsdam and Berlin) where you can drive fast, but even there 160km/h is "adequate" if you drive a long distance. The XC70 with the D5 engine has plenty of power to keep in pace with any driving condition.
This reminds me of a comment I once read, stating that an Audi A6 Tdi can bring you faster to a far away destination than a Porche Carrera could ever do at any speed, because the latter one requires much more stops at the gas station!
Just to confirm Gary's post;

..........but 190 km/h is not fast enough ;)
Just found out that my sales brochures says "speed limited to 130 mph".........gotta talk to my dealer :(

Tested my 2004 D5 some months ago. Reached 215 km/h on the speedo, the GPS gave me 208 km/h as max speed. Acc is ok up to 185-190 but from there it takes time. Think it is possible to reach 225 on the speedo if you are patient....

IMHO, personally I do not think one should drive an XC at those kind of speed mentioned here. XC are not meant to be driven fast! No doubt that it will go up to 200km/h. But it is not stable at that kind of speed. XC is not designed to do that.
I have pushed my S60 above 210km/h and I can say that car is definitely more stable than the XC. But as age is catching up.. :( I am becoming more a safe driver now… Got my family to think about whenever I tried to speed. I hate this aging thing….. :o don’t you wish you can turn back the clock at times…. :D
XC are not meant to be driven fast!

NOW you tell me!
