A friend of a friend is looking to sell his 2002 XC70. It has approx. 55,000km, the premium package and the family package. the warranty runs until july '06. He has all the dealer service records.

I'm moving from a 1991 acura integra (my first and only car), and was wondering what I should be looking for when I test drive the volvo this weekend.

any thoughts and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It would be easier to give advice, if you could tell if the car is petrol or diesel, manual or automatic, does have DSTC or not, will you drive it in snow, mud.

Car is: petrol, automatic, will have to check on the DSTC. I won't be doing anything approaching offroading - city/highway driving, but we get a decent amount of snow in toronto - probably won't be too concerned with mud though.

You can find info on this forum about:
Different model years here (http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4486).
You have to decide if VC or Haldex will fit you. Mine vote is Haldex.
Some info about tires here (http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5383). You should check tyre wear also.
There's an issue about rattle sound here (http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5383) and here (http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5400) and noise here (http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4357).
You mentioned he has all the dealer service records. Despite this, I suggest to go together to the dealer and let them check the car's inner memory (service diary), and the TSBs, upgrades that Volvo VADIS system suggests.

If it's somebody you know, this is great ! Also this means that you know how that person drives and how the car car was treated. This is another good point. Yes tire size is very very important for those model years ( 2001-2002) with viscous coupling. But for peace of mind check the condition of the tires. If Original owner, at 55,000Km of normal driving the tires should be the original ( Pirelli Scorpion). If so, and all tires are equally used, don't worry it's a great buy. Mine had 90,000 Km before I had to change them. If tires aren't equally used, before doing transaction, have the bevel gear and viscous coupling checked by dealer ( it's still under warranty). Finally if everything is A OK and if you make sure that you always have 4 identical tires and maintained properly (tire rotation, oil, filters), then GO AHEAD AND ENJOY THAT GREAT CAR !

Link doesn't work and where have you placed it?
And why would you dig up a 6 year old thread instead of starting your own?

I don't think DTSC was available on the '02 Cdn-spec XC. I know mine doesn't have it and it has just about every option that was available in the Canadian market at the time (it too was out of the GTA). As far as this unit the only concern I have is that it hasn't done much mileage in 10 years. Can I assume that it either sat a lot or it was mostly within the GTA? I've had a few cars over the years like this and from an appearance standpoint they are usually pretty prime. The problems I have found have been associated with seals sch as in the brake systems and in the cooling system, primarily water pumps. It's not good for a car to sit too much unless measure are taken to protect it. If the mileage was all in town driving though, that is almost worse than sitting, but give it a good hard drive then look it over carefully. I ended up buying the ones I did and still had issues, but in the end they were still reasonable deals.

Good luck,

Bill
