rust stain removal on mag wheels 2002 XC

Need to find an easy way to get rid of rust stains on my original wheels. I tried some wheel cleaner from Volvo but doesn't work. Their must be something out there that can remove this. I try to clean my wheels very often but still, over time you can see the " red " stains left by the rusting brake dust.

Is there anyone with a solution.

The wheels are painted so I would think the stain could be removed with a light application of rubbing compound.

As a preventative measure have you tried waxing your wheels? I find it's much easier to remove the brake dust on waxed wheels. I use the term "wax" but since I use Zaino products it's technically not the correct term. But I would expect similar results with more traditional car care products.
