1. Car lost acceleration while on highway within five miles of my filling up the gas tank. Engine service message came on. I did not see any smoke. Wifey who was driving at time mentioned a maybe skipping or shaking feeling when she took foot off gas pedal. Prior, I drove about over 30 minutes to do a couple hour hike and after hike headed about 10 minutes to a nearby gas station - both those drives appeared without incident. Car has less than 140K total miles. I had it flat bed towed to my service place to deal with Monday. Thoughts of potential problem and fix repair?

2. Afther the flat bed deposited my car at the service place, I noticed on the parking lot there a mostly-rubber bulbous stopper looking thing that had a Volvo imprint. I saved it and put it in my cup holder so did not get a chance to take a photo. Seems about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. Also not sure it came from my car versus already sitting in parking lot but I'm pretty sure I did not see it prior so maybe more likely from my car. What the heck is it?

A picture would sure help with the part ID. That you found it in a service place parking lot makes it more likely to be off another car. Lots more loose parts there than a regular lot.

Filling up didn’t cause this. Possible causes are myriad, and the codes will help diagnose it. Bad MAF, coil failure, boost hose came loose, are common, but not certain. Not enough details to guess...

Without codes it’s tough to say, but you could have a bad coil. I had one go on the highway a few months back. Lost a ton of power, dash light came on, and a prominent vibration.

First things first though, plug in a scanner and get them codes!

update for 1. is that it seems the throttle body, and for 2. need to get the car up on the rack to figure out origin - stay tuned

What makes you think it’s the throttle body? Any particular thing point you in that direction?

FYI I bought my car and lost power on the drive home. Turned out to be the fuel rail pressure sensor.

Ah, it’s a 2001. Might be time to call XEMODEX about the throttle body...

What's XEMODEX? I asked if it was the ETM but they seemed to suggest not.
Why would throttle body fail right after filling up gas tank, or coincidence?

Coincidence, but 2001s have the magneti marelli throttle module that ALL fail. Has your ever been replaced?

What does VIDA tell you with a scan?

xemodex.com was one of the first to solve the bad 99-01 throttle problem aftermarket.

a few more details and more coming later:
they ordered a harnessed throttle body from Bosch; the precise Vida code, identity of the 1x2 rubber bulbous part, and more coming...
for the original magenti marelli throttle module, at what average (and range) mileage do they fail?

Update

1. They replaced throttle body with a harnessed remanufactured Volvo part. Unsure what was removed but will ask again along with specific Vida code. For the original magenti marelli throttle module, at what average (and range) mileage do they fail?

2. The ~1 x 2 inch rubber bulbous object that fell off after flat bed tow deposited car is a Bump Stop. How critical is that to replace, deal with? How many are there on the Volvo and location? What is its function?

1. what average (and range) mileage do they fail?

2. How many are there on the Volvo and location? What is its function?

1. 30-100k miles depending on how the car is driven - the throttle position sensors wear out - mild driving keeps the throttle almost in the same position wearing them out quicker.

2. 2 Bump stops in the rear - 1 on each side, to keep the suspension from bottoming out metal to metal, the front ones are installed at the top of the struts.

If you buy a new throttle it requires a download from volvo to make it work after it is installed. "Rebuilt" modules require programming also - Aftermarket companies program the throttle using your VIN number before it is shipped and installed. And re builders such as xemodex use non-contact potentiometers to prevent future failure.

Don Willson - mentioned in this thread

was instrumental in getting volvo to warranty throttle modules for 10 yrs/x miles - valid only in the US.

1. Bump Stop - is it critical to replace the one that fell off ?
2. Throttle - okay, I assume the service place did all that with the remanufactured volvo part throttle, but I'll try to ask to confirm (programming dowload, non-contact potentiometer). The diagnostic code appears: ECM 91F0 91A7 903F 903C.9350 Image embedded is the old throttle body with brand model imprinted.
