Out of interest, I compared the 2001 and the 2002 on cars.yahoo.com and noted only one difference: fuel economy.

The 01 supposedly gets 18/22 MPG and the 02 gets 19/24.

My 2001 gets closer to the 02 numbers, even better. Any idea what the discrepancy is for?

This leads me to beleive they misjudged the 2001's fuel economy last year, or have they improved it for 2002?

Ideas?

oops.. one more difference which contributes to the issue somewhat:

Coastal,

What about rear seat cup-holders. I remember reading in earlier threads that '01s didn't have cup-holders for rear passengers.

My '02 has two cup holders in the inside of the front arm rest that are accessible for the rear passengers when you flip the front arm rest over towards the rear seats??? Or, did the '01s also have this as an option??

sorry, I should have clarified. I was referring to the evident drivetrain changes on the above mentioned link.

Sounds like the new cupholder feature can be retrofitted to the 2001, correct?

FYI: Here's a list of the documented changes from 2001 to 2002:

Emergency Trunk Release - Bright yellow plastic handle with cord attached to the locking mechanism to allow for easy release of the trunk lid when pulled.

Improved Thottle Management for 5 cylinder turbos. The XC will be discernably more responsive and will enhance performance in everyday traffic situation without sacrificing low speed performance

Handbrake Lever Release Button and dash panel vent adjustment buttons will be in a metal-like material to enhance visual appearance and feel-Avail. W150 / Dec. 10th Production

Interior Switch for Fuel Lid

STC Improvements - improved engine intervention due to a more powerful processor and new algorithms

Traction Control in STC and TRACS has been improved by increasing the speed range of the system. It will regulate the system upto 75 MPH (previously 44 MPH) but has to enter the traction control mode at a speed lower than 25 MPH.
DSTC availability with AWD - Available Dec. 10 production
Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) - dramatically reduces stopping distances in panic situations (Mk 25 Brake System)

Rear cupholders

New Features (Options):
Premium Sound System Upgrade - The V70 and XC will receive the Audio Max system of the S60.

Deep Tinted Windows - W139 Production Start

Integrated Booster Cushion with 40/20/40 - Sept. Production

Apparently the only way to get the folding rear armrest/storage bin was to order it with the 60/40 seat configuration. I was'nt even aware of this seat option when I ordered my car. An '01 XC in the showroom of the dealership proved this to be true. I was also told that this item cannot be retrofitted to '01 XC's. If anyone knows otherwise please post so. In reference to the cupholders on the inside of the front armrest, they don't exist on my car. The top of the armrest does flip over to the back, only to reveal a flat surface not really suitable for beverages.

I was under the impression that for 2002 they changed the flipover part of the center console to accomodate cups and to stop at a preset angle.

kw02blkv70xc, is this correct?

Here are a few shots of the rear seat cup holder and tray setup available via the front arm rest in my 2002 V70XC.

Hmm...interesting. I wonder if this part can be retrofitted for '01 XC's? Everything looks the same with the exception of the dual center cupholder section.

Looks like everything is retrofittable, just a question of how many parts need to be replaced. The hinge assembly looks like it needs to be different in order to accomodate the cup holder part.

Pretty cool stuff.. thanks for the photos Kevin!

Stopped by the auto mall this evening after a romp in the snow and took a closer look at the 2002' XC's. Pretty cool, there was 20 or so SUV's and pickups up on the hill and then us in the XC.

Is the leather different in the 2002? It was pretty dark, but it looks a little like suede with a few more stitched lines in the rear seats. The center arm rest looks cool, and I think it's available with the 40/20/40 split. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

And what's Volvo Guard? Noticed it imprinted on a few of the rear passenger side windows. Does this mean it has the security laminate?

The rear cupholders in the center console seem to be an option too since I noticed some of the 2002's had the extra hinge components and others did not.

No sign of the Ocean Race Edition yet!

Here's the latest update on that cool cupholder found on the front armrest of '02 XC's. For anyone interested in adding this feature to their '01 XC, be prepared to shell out some major dinero!! Upon speaking to the parts dept., I learned that the entire tray assembly including the faux titanium grab bar would need to be replaced... don't ask me why. The cost for all of this? &#36380.00 Cdn, just for parts! For that price, one may as well go for the integrated cooler/armrest for the rear passengers.

There are Xenon lights and a rain sensor available for the 2000 model. Leather sport seats are available (I don't know if this was possible earlier in the states).

The new Navigation System (DVD) is perfect, even with TMC.

You mean 2001 model?
Do you know the part number for the Xenon headlights?

Hi! Coastal
I noticed the fuel economy numbers also and asked the Dealer what the reason for it was. He felt that they wanted to be more competitive on the numbers. I personally have gotten 25.9 MPG on my 2001. It sounds like they underestimated to cover their back sides.

The pictures of the cup holders above look just like my new 2001xc.  Has anyone tried the optional cooler/armrest with cupholders for the rear passengers?  We are considering this for the kids for longer haul trips.

Igor: Sorry, 2002 model. Volvo is able to assemble the xenon lights for the cross country after march 2002. I have no part number yet - but - you cannot integrate those lights later on because of changes in the front of the car special for those lights.

Ciao

tlc, take a look at http://www.v70xc.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=1&topic=37 (http://www.v70xc.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=1&topic=37) where you'll find some thoughts on the XC fridge.

a recent update: the tab that keeps the top securely closed snapped off, and my dealer tells me Volvo doesn't offer a replacement part. Still functions properly without, but might start to rattle over the larger bumps.
