VOLVO'S all-new S40 is smaller outside, bigger and brighter on the inside. The good-looking Swedish four-door sedan is shorter and wider than its predecessor.

It is, says Volvo president Hans-Olov Olsson, a "full-sized Volvo made into a compact".

A T5 version, with all-wheel-drive, is expected next year, while a V50 wagon version is due in six months.

The S40 sits on a longer wheelbase and wider track than its predecessor yet is 48mm shorter in a strong, muscular-looking package, highlighted by a traditional Volvo grille.

This front-drive, transverse-engined platform is likely to form the basis for an XC50, a compact soft-roader, as well as the next Ford Focus and possibly Land Rover's next Freelander.

Here the platform is used to build a handsome car with a cab-forward profile, a wheel at each corner and big shoulders. The rear tail-lights and big grille up front emphasise the S40's relationship to the rest of the Volvo family.

Looks like there is still some smoke there, and where there is smoke there is ...............

There is likely to be two new models for 2006 in the XC series - the XC30 and XC50, guess I will have to amend some of my earlier postings, well I'm getting some duff info at the moment, can only post what I am being told. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Not sure if this means anything, but the Volvo Concept Lab website has the XC50 as a possible future design on there. They call it the "4 seater SUV, aka the Easy XC". I remember being on the site after reading the initial post here that the concept had been killed and it wasn't there then. Obviously, this isn't a guarantee they're going to move forward with it, but the fact it is a recent addition to the site may mean they haven't given up completely on the idea. They're asking for feedback, so check it out!

Looks like the new Volvo XC50 will be announced in Geneva
http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif
Due in 2004/5 is a new Volvo XC50 (SUV), which is derived from a mostly Volvo engineered, next gen. Euro Ford Focus (which is also derived from the NEW S40 platform). Engines could be shared (with Ford) in the Volvo XC50 including a new six-cylinder producing 200+ bhp. Air-suspension could be a possibility solving ground clearance issues, competition is expected with the X3. Rumour's suggest VW, Audi, Acura and Mercedes all have small SUV's under development as well. I beleive the XC50 could be produced at the Land Rover site in Solihull site in England. The release dates for the following are still subject to terms - March 05 for the C50 - October 05 for the XC50 - and October 06 fo the XC30.

The photos above are actually from the ACC concept car back in 2000.
It's definitely not the new XC50.

Whilst I do not want to start a riot over this http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/happy.gif if you look at the photos of the rear in the gallery and blow it up to a larger size you will see the XC50 plate attached, this is not a trick and from my sources it is on trial and test in China, which is a Country VC are trying to break into in a big way. If I was not convinced of the story and pictures I would not have posted rubbish http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif

Looking at Transwede, the pictures shown are all mockups whereas the Chinese ones are of a true working model going through its paces.

If wrong I will make a big donation to the site, and you can hold me to that. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

I can almost guarantee the letters XC50 have been photoshopped.

The photo in question is the original ACC from about two years ago and is what the XC90 is based upon. More photos of it can be seen here (http://www.volvoxc.com/xc90/photos/acc/)! Volvo's conceptlab site is quite old, hasn't been updated in quite some time.. note the Copyright 2002.

Now about that donation.... just kidding. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Coastal, Man of my word, if you look at the two photos, one you will see the drivers hand and body in view of the camera and the rear is just that. I am that sure there is no sly tricks going on, but if the real thing does not look like that I will honour my word http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif BTW all the other photos are all mock-ups

You could also look at this site/picture
XC50 (http://www.geocities.com/futurecars100/FutureCars-VolvoXC50.html)

And according to my details that should be in about 18 months for full press releases, http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

Of course there is a clue in the picture, can anyone spot it?

I'm 100% sure that the new XC50 will definitely make it into production in the near future.
A best friend who owns 10 Volvo dealerships just came back from Barcelona testing the new S40/V50 at the Global Launch. He assured that the XC50 will be coming out soon.

However, as for the photo of the 2000 ACC above; it was a concept car to test the reaction/response of consumers prior to the debut of XC90 a few years later. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

If the new XC50 looks like the photo of the ACC above, I'll be making a big donation to this site too http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Cheers

I went to the dealer last Monday here in central New Jersey
and asked him of new xc50. He assures me it will be all wheel drive for v50 and s40. It's just his words http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

what do you mean by allwheel drive v50/s40 ? does this mean that there will NOT be an XC50, only AWD versions of the V50 & S40 ?

The new V50 with the Haldex AWD is already out in Europe. See Here at Haldex's website (http://www.haldex.com/index_main.asp?f=/news/2004011320370.asp%3f). http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

However, there WILL also be a XC50 that is different from the V50 AWD in the near future. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

**** FYI: the VOLVO internal Code for the XC50 is Y278 or V55.*** http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

ifnt420,

Firstly - I do like your new animated avatar, which doesn't materialise as such - didn't know you could do that on this board - very clever!

Secondly, It seems to fall to me to pour cold water on things (or perhaps a more conservative approach to most sorts of hyperbole) - To my mind AWD was first developed to get more bhp on the tarmac (grunt on the pavement); you can see that from the Haldex website and their involvement with racing?

That's possibly why the T5 version of the V50 has AWD.

Some clever-clogs realising that AWD was sort-of-similar-but-not-really-equivalent to 4WD, that it could probably be used in soft roader applications; hence the Audi, XC70 and Jaguar estates?

So I wouldn't read too much into the expression -
AWD + V50 = XC50,
Time and market research will determine.

In olden days the number replacing the least significant digit indicated the number of doors i.e. 855 was the estate variant of the 850 so V55 may be a spurious code.

In the UK it appears that there should be numbers of V50s on the streets 'cos an awful lot of dealers are having 'events' in mid to late March - but time will tell what models will actually arrive.

Thanks, I like this avatar too.

In regards to your questions on the Internal Codes, here's the rest for all P1 platform cars. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Volvo is spending 2.8 billion euro on the new cars and launches the biggest investments in new cars since the company exists.

The cars described here uses the P1 platform developed by Volvo, Mazda and Ford. its the basis for the next Focus, Mazda 3 and the Volvo P1-cars.

The cars:

S40 (Code Y276): Sedan
V50 (Code Y280), station wagon
XC50 (Code Y278) (also called V55)
* bigger than Opel Zafira, smaller than Mazda MPV
C50 (Code Y281/1), four-seat coupe
C50 (Code Y281/2), four-seat convertible

So as you can see, the code for the regular V50 is Y280. and for XC50 is Y278.

In the next year, Volvo's lineup will be vibrant with new models. The only profitable division of Ford plans to launch two new cars each year for the next five years. In 2004, we'll see the YCC ("Your Concept Car") at the Geneva show, and a small crossover vehicle also is expected to be shown in concept form.

And now, just three months after the debut of the new S40, the V50 sports wagon has been unveiled at the Bologna Auto Show in Italy. It's also been confirmed that there will be a C40 Convertible, although the topless version of the new S40 isn't expected until mid 2005. Volvo has established a joint venture with Pininfarina for the development of the Convertible and at the moment the Volvo development team is working at the prototype in Pininfarina's premises in Torino, Italy.
