Hello fellow VolvoXCers'

I've enjoyed this website for sometime now, there's a wealth of information and everyone is very helpful. I recently processed my OSD for my 2003 XC70 and I have just been notified that there are ZERO wood steering http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif I have spent countless hours druling over my computer looking at those beautiful steering wheels and,in my minds eye, my long awaited volvo XC70 must have this option. Do I have any recourse in this matter? If I sound desperate, you've have perfect hearing, I'am. As we get older......uh... I mean mature it's the little things that bring us some joy and this was one of those things for me.

I 'm on the perverbial little tiny island surrounded by water and this is my message in a bottle.

OH BTW I gave my OSD rep a list of the options for OSD orders I retrieved of this web site and I'm in a tiny dispute about the price of the rear spoiler: I submitted a price of 310 dollars and they are stipulating the correct amount to be 375
dollars. Has anyone paid 310? Oh well let the games begin.

peace

Huff

yohuff:

First off -- WELCOME.

My OSD rear spoiler cost is $375. It really was one of the few things I indulged in purposely as IMO it's very cool looking and adds more visual appeal to the cars backend http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif It does in no way interfer with the center high position brake light as it's lower surface is somewhat contoured to provide good clearance for it to remain visible to cars following behind.

I also wanted the wood/leather steering wheel and was greatly disappointed when I was told that Volvo no longer offers it. At first I thought it was related to me having ordered the Nav System that requires controls on the steering wheel/hub. However, that wasn't the sole reason and again was told -- SORRY you can't order it regardless http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif I think this a shame as a friend has this steering wheel on his S80 MY2000 and it's VERY hansome indeed.

Maybe Volvo is getting younger, more reckless or simply not maturing or listening to its customers these days http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The wood/steering wheel is spendy but surely it lines Volvo's pockets with improved revenue, no?

Welcome as well....

Grumble...grumble.... in my best "official" Volvo voice:

"Volvo is saving the wood steering wheels for the XC90. There is a shortage, thus temporarily not an option for the 03's, early 04's. A lot of those XC90's on the boat had Premium package (which includes the wood steering wheel) and they only produce so many a year. Sorry."

But then again, if you REALLY want one, you can cancel your order, lose your deposit, and order another when they have a larger inventory. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif There... does that sound like a Volvo answer. Sorry, I'm not "mature" yet.

I'd go ahead and diplomatically ask at the factory.  Alternatively, you could ask your dealer to swap, but since it would be no longer new... there is likely no quick recourse.  It's a wierd situation.  Options and the inclusion of items not in the standard packages are "subject to availability and change without notice."  It is in the contract... honest.

I sympathize, but the leather is very nice too.  It could be plastic....

I think you&#39;ve said the right words </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I&#39;d go ahead and diplomatically ask at the factory.[/QUOTE]<span id='postcolor'> because as I now recall my S80 friend who has the wood/leather steering wheel did actually get the factory to install it in Goteborg -- he was so happy that they did this for him. Sooooo, I will take your advice and use my best English friendly modest voice and ask for it http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I just had a customer order an Volvo wagon with a wood steering wheel, but they will get a regular steering wheel...

Volvo recently posted a sales bulletin stating that worldwide demand for wood steering wheels has exceeded supplier
production capacity. Because of this they are removing it as an option until late in the second quarter of this year.

I was hoping to get a wood steering wheel too but I wanted the one they were offering the Europeans (mostly wood). Was it Martin from Gothenburg that showed us a picture of his on the 2003 XC. That is the one I think really looks great.

Thank you Mr WestLake and apologizes to B Olsson (calling him Martin??). Now that is a great steering wheel. Do you think I can get that steering wheel if I let them know I was born in Sweden?

See, now your in trouble.... fire away with your OSD questions. Everybody&#33; William is the OSD Guru from Fairfield Volvo (Fairfield, CA) He had quite a reputation in Marin County at Marin Volvo. &nbsp; If your in his area, its worth the drive to have him place your order. &nbsp;(Shameless plug from a local)

Will, do us a favor and check in a bit for a couple of days so the contingent of OSD for Feb/March/April can have a chance to get those unresolved things figured out.

The one thing that a lot of us would like a definitive about is the options open to add items that our (varying degree of knowledge dealers) have said were not possible to add. It has been said that the FDC is quite able to add a lot of items at the time of pickup- certainly those that do not have to be added at the time of manufacture. Things like:

Skid plates/engine protection plate
Roof ribs, bars
12v Rear
Motion sensor
Wood Wheel IFF available
Speaker upgrade
etc.

Can you shed any light on the situation and put a few people at ease?

Also, the insurance question of Kersti&#39;s is a good one.

Any personal recommedations from you- or bits of process advice are appreciated.

The Motion Sensor and Inclination Sensor features were things I wanted to add to my XC70 as my wife also has these on her S80 and we&#39;ve grown accustomed to having them for added security. As I had not known these were options for the XC70 until later in the OSD ordering process I tried to add them after I had made my initial OSD order. I was told that it was not possible to add them as Volvo had already started manufacturing my XC70 and these two features needed to be added (presumably wired for) eraly in the manufacturing process. My point here is that, armed with this info I suspect that the FDC will not be able to add these features for you http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

The wood/leather steering wheel saga is one I will be monitoring closely as I really do want this type steering wheel.

Thanks for all the info people are posting on the OSD process, and if William can help shed any light on how to best proceed in getting some resolution to conflicting local Volvo sales person statements that would be extremely useful/helpful etc.

Thanks in advance William for any help you can throw our way &nbsp;http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

So you are going to pay your old country a visit, do you speak any Swedish?

Hope you are going to have a good time in Sweden and Norway with many kilometres of beautiful road views.

Cheers http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I left Sweden when I was 5 so I speak Swedish very poorly. I do understand most of it though especially Stockholm Swedish. Actually I was last in Sweden summer of 2000, I was just starting to consider buying a Volvo about then. My daughter is coming and it will be her first trip to Sweden and to meet some of her relatives. Just hope we will have reasonable weather. Here in S Calif it must be 85F today.

That’s warm&#33; As a contrast a can tell you that we have about –25 deg C (-13.00 F) right now (10 pm) , but that’s nothing unusual were I live. (northern Sweden)

Take care and be cool http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Geeesh Mr Westlake, the -25 deg C sound really cold.

On this note what outer clothing is advised for Sweden for late March thru mid April?

Assume travel from Goteborg-&gt;Oslo-&gt;Bergen-&gt;Oslo-&gt;Stockholm-&gt;Goteborg.

My recommedation is that you prepare for every kind of weather if you want to get outside your new XC. The area you plan to drive thru is in early spring that period, but the weather is shifting a lot in Mars-April. You should expect day temperatures to be somewhere between 5-15 deg C (~40-60 F) with a possible drop to below 0 deg C during night. Unfortunately I cannot promise anything when it comes to weather, the worst scenario is that it is snowing and temperatures are below zero deg. C, but let’s not hope for that.

The other problem is that you are going to have shifts in temperature and weather especially in Norway depending on if you choose to travel on some of the mountain roads, which could let you climb quit a bit above the sea level, so if you want to get outside your car and take some photos or just look at the beautiful view, prepare your self for that with a warm wind and water protected clothing. Probably you could leave your polar dress at home, but you never know. Oh I almost forgot be sure to bring something warm for your head for those cold nights or days. &nbsp;

Enjoy your journey and drive safely. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

can i offer a suggestion on the wooden steering wheel or other osd accessories? &nbsp;send alexandra at the fdc and email and see what she has to say. &nbsp;there were lots of accessories, aftermarket goodies, etc. at the &#39;butik&#39; when i was there in september. &nbsp;it might be possible to pick up your car at the fdc, drive it around, and then have the steering wheel or other accessories installed at turn-in for shipping?? &nbsp;good luck.
