Hey Folks, I've been fanitically reading this website for months in preparation for the 2004 XC 70 pickup on 26 Jan 04. The wife and I are planning our trip to Sweeden to pick up the car in Gothenburg. We're both active duty Air Force, stationed at Ramstein Air Base Germany (both medical officers). I're read all the feedback from OSD forum on individual's trips and all, now I need to know the down and dirty on places to visit. The must see sites. Looking for beautiful scenery and picture perfect settings. We'll be spending approximately 4 days in Sweeden, and then will make our way towards Denmark, Neitherlands and Germany. Also, any info on the cost of ferry and bridges in Denmark would be a bonus. Thanks to all of you, this site has been super helpful and enligthening. Happy New Year

Well, you probably know this already if you've seen all the OSD trip reports and photos - but I would vote for a trip up the coast from Gothenburg (Bohuslän province), with its stark but beautiful rocky coastline and picturesque villages. Fjällbacka is particularly beautiful. Feel free to PM me if you want more details.

I have to agree with AutoMonkey.

The drive going north along the coast from Gothenburg is one of the best. The small fishing village called "Mollosund" would be one of my destinations for a lunch or a overnight stay. It's on the coast It's not too far from Gothenburg (approx. 2hrs). The drive to Mollosund is great.

A closer destination (1 hr.) from Gothenburg is the small island of Marstrand, a popular destination in summer time. It has a beautiful castle with a very small town with nice quaint hotels just below. The island is small enough to walk around it in 1 1/2 hrs. It could be worth a look although I don't know if anything is open during the winter.

Try to take the "B" roads, it's slower but much more scenic. Don't be afraid to take a side roads in Sweden, They are open to everyone without consequences but you still need to observe posted signs. Sweden is fantastic for exploring, it's very safe to do so. Right to access even on private roads is an important part of the Swedish culture. I can't say enough about it and encourage everyone to go the link and read about it.

The drive south to Malmo is nice when taking the coastal route but not as nice as the north. The highway south to Malmo is in excellent condition.

You may want to look into taking the Helsingborg ferry to Denmark and skip taking the bridge from Malmo. I think it's a bit over rated compared to some other bridges in Europe and expensive to cross (I think 43 Euro).

If your driving down to South Germany from Holland, I recommend going to the Valley of the Seven Castles. It is the Valley of the Eisch River on the Luxembourg / German border.

Hope this helps

Has anyone gone OSD and taken the Swedish castle tours? What are the costs for this tour?

We wanted to take some tours but they all closed in September and we were in the area in October so it was out of the question. Some advise for future OSD people, if you want to do alot of "touristy" stuff, most of it closed down end of September. Still can shop and take in a opera I guess. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif
