Hello all, I'm considering OSD and have a couple quick initial questions (and I'm sure there are many more to come):

1) Did people who have used OSD all use their local dealer? Anyone use an out of state dealer who was more knowledgeable in the process? Any downfalls to doing this?

2) Has anyone used one of the Volvo package trips or did everyone here just plan their own trip?

Thanks!

I used my local dealership's OSD sales person. This is the bast approach to OSD if your local shop is knowledgeable. Even if they aren't they should be able to get all the help they need from the OSD/VCNA regional specialist. If you go out of state you're relying on telephone/fax for communication and that could present problems. If out of state is but a few miles then no problem.

I thought about OSD tours but found them spendy and my son and I wanted to plan other things for our trip that just weren't avail thru OSD.

I'm sure others may have opted for the OSD tours so hang in there and hopefully they will post.

Good luck and again -- welcome. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

jthorsen, Welcome -

To add to Barry's comment, I think that most dealers should be able to help you with OSD orders. However, if you have the luxury of selecting from several different dealers, I would recommend shopping around - some may be more helpful and knowledgable than others.

This site is a great resource for finding out about the OSD program. I was limited in the time I had available, and wanted to explore a bit more than was offered by the short Volvo tours - so I planned my own schedule (see this thread (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=111) for details).

Good luck: based on my experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Volvo OSD. I should add that I haven't completely finished the process as my car doesn't arrive in the US until end of April - however, everything so far has been great.

Even if you order through an out of state dealer the car will be delivered to a dealer in your area.  The accommodating dealer might be your local dealer or one in a nearby town.  Given that you will be dealing with a nearby dealer for warranty service it probably is a good idea to include several area dealers in your shopping.  It is nice to have some relationship with the dealer other than the fact that some out of state dealer shipped a car to them for you.

As for the Volvo tours they are relatively expensive.  I suppose they could be a good value for what they offer (if that is what you want).  However, I feel that some of the excitement to travel is planning your own iternarary or even leaving it a but unstructured to allow for serendipity.

jthorsen,

my osd story is at www.virtualtourist.com, member homepage=RichardBlaine.  i travelled all over the country and visited dealers in colorado, north carolina, boston, new york, alabama, new mexico, texas, and virginia before going with the local dealer in el paso, tx.  all of the dealers were helpful, some more knowledgeable than others.  our el paso dealer had not done an osd before.  i am convinced you can get good service from any of them.  your car will be shipped to any dealer you want.  we considered shipping to the east coast and driving 'cross country' (pun intended). but opted to spend over a month in europe instead.  good luck in your search.  your dealer should have a dvd for osd by now.  it contains lots of good info.

hope this is helpful

I am curious how long it took folks to get confirmation for their OSD orders ? I placed mine (Fed-EX'd paperwork) with dealer on March 11th, and still do not have a Volvo confirmation. I spoke to my salesman this morning and he said that the 10 days was not very accurate, it was usually more like 2-3 weeks.
any comments ?
thanks !

I placed my order on March 7 and still have not received packet.  I called 800-631-1667 OSD in New Jersey and they confirmed my order by my name--stated when car was to be picked up and gave me the order number--I asked them for Volvo Travel Dept #  1-800-730-3555 and I gave them my order number and I have Airline & Hotel booked and still awaiting packet.  If I waited for packet I wouldn't be able to make arrangements to fit in with my days off.  My 1st choice for departure was filled but was able to book next day. Good luck.. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif merv

After speaking to several local dealers, who had limited experience with OSD, I ordered through Yannis at Stillman Volvo in Pennsylvania. I had contacted Yannis after following the threads on different sites, including swedespeed.  To summarize, the experience couldn't have been better or easier - It helps working with someone very knowledgeable about the cars, options, etc.  Finding a local dealer out here in LA area to accept delivery hasn't been difficult - any dealer working with VOlvo OSD is "supposed to" accept delivery, though one that I tried, Santa Moncia Volvo, said that they wouldn't. I spoke to OSD re this, mainly for their info., and am going with another delership which has serviced our 96 850turbo.

Just wondering here, but is mesh aluminum inlays an available option in OSD?

Pico-

Sorry, I can't answer that.  There are also carbon inlays available as custom on European OSD orders.  That's alikely a question that Jason Borsch would have to answer.  It would be "special" indeed.  The aluminum inlays look pretty neat- especially with the contrast against the black leather.
