Having driven older vehicles for a few years before buying my new XC, I was a bit out of touch with car washing.
Why expose more rust spots? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I read with interest the posts about the various wash products, especially the special sprays to remove brake dust from the fancy wheels. Tried a number of the suggested brands. Spent quite a bit of $$$. Still ended up scrubbing the wheels with my special wheel brush (more $$ )
With my hectic travel schedule and the rotten weather at home of late, the XC was getting pretty grubby. A nice evening in Vancouver yesterday, but all I had was a hose, a bucket, and a wash mit. Did have some "household cleaners" available though.

Sprayed the wheels with "Fantastic" ( about $1.29/quart at Costco) , put about 10 drops (that stuff is foamy) of dishwashing liquid (Palmolive -about $1.29/gallon at Costco) into my bucket of water, and went at 'er.

Well, you know what happened. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
So many suds, I could have used 5 drops instead of 10.
Wheels just sprayed clean with the hose.
Car came up gleaming and air-dryed with no spots.
Looks like a million $. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Rats! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif
Oh well, maybe the kid next door can use some really expensive and highly regarded car cleaning products!

hi cbob.

I wouldn't suggest using dish soap for the car as it's specifically designed to remove contaminents from surfaces, unfortunately this also includes automotive wax.

In fact, many auto detailers will wash the car with dish soap (Dawn brand is supposedly the best) ONLY when they're prepping to give the car a fresh coat of wax. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

No harm done on the paint, but I'd suggest another quick wash with the dish soap followed up by a wax job.

Fantastik is probably ok for the wheels, but I haven't direct experience.

I agree that most automotive specific products are probably overpriced though, that's the price we pay for purpose built products made for a comparatively smaller market... ie general household cleaner vs automotive specialty cleaner.

My detailers use Dawn dish soap specifically to help strip old wax. They say it helps, but is not complete in removal unless used consecutively. In other words, we're stuck with overpriced "automotive shampoos".

I've been using Mothers Trigger Wash - big suds, lifts dirt (even bugs if you soak) and a small amount is all that's necessary. It's really good - and it smells divine... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
