I'm curious to know how much time a customer is allotted during the delivery process. Is it a fixed amount of time or do they simply provide as much time as the customer requires?

Is there a waiting line (I assume so) and therefore there could be pressure from the FDC staff to move things along.

I know I'll have tons of questions and I'm apt to simply chat at length about the car and all of its features in the hope of gleaning as much knowledge from the FDC person.

I've gone thru new car delivery at my local dealership several times over the years and it does take time.

I will expect the FDC staff to be far more knowledgeable about the XC70 than say my local sales person here in USA. Simply due to this I will be asking more questions etc.

In general, how much time should one expect the FDC person to devote to the actual customer pickup process and Q&A time?

As I've ordered the Volvo Nav System I would expect that could chew up quite a bit of time going over. For others that have picked up cars at FDC and have had Nav System installed just how much time was devoted going over the Nav System features? Alexandra has indicated they can loan me a DVD map disc for Sweden so I'll certainly be able to explore using the Nav System after FDC completes and during my tour about before drop-off time.

How do others who haven't experienced OSD before feel about the FDC pickup time allottment? What are your expectations?

Thanks in advance.

Could be anything from 10 min to 2 hours. The menus of the Nav system are pretty self explaining, but a look in the manual before taking of wouldn’t hurt otherwise do the opposite, plough your self through the Nav system menus and fill in the blanks with help of the manual, depends on which kind of learning strategy you have.

The most difficult part for me was to handle the buttons on the backside of the steering wheel (doesn’t know if this apply to you Barry if you are installing a wooden steering wheel). Take yourself a few minutes to get used to the Nav buttons (steering wheel or remote control) before you start off. So you have the focus on the road instead of the Nav system control buttons. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

Mr_Westlake:

Thanks for the advice -- I believe the wood/leather steering wheel does also have Nav Sys controls.

Do you have the Nav System in your car? If so, is it the DVD-based system?

My son will be with me and I'm sure he's going to enjoy navigating for me/us -- especially using the fancy Nav System -- my son loves gadgets just like I do. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Barry, yes I have a VNS (Volvo Navigation System) in my car and it is DVD-based.

The Nav system came with one DVD disk (Europe DVD-map). But unfortunately it’s not complete some countries are still missing e.g. Ireland, Norway and Finland. In week 10 release of the DVD Europe-map (will by included with every car produced from week 10, model year 2004) they have included a small part of Norway and Finland and sometime this summer they have finished the work, probably both Norway and Finland are completely described. But that DVD-map will not be released until late summer or autumn. Anyhow Sweden are very well described so you will have plenty of fun playing around with the Nav system, when travelling in Sweden, but do not forget the paper map when travelling to Norway or buy one along the road.

Volvo have very strange price settings for the DVD map-update system, you have to pay full price ( ~400$ ) every time you upgrade to the latest DVD map. I think they should take a look at the software industry where you usually pay less amount money for an upgrade compared to the complete software. In my opinion you cannot call it an upgrade when you are paying full price every time you buy a new map no matter what the changes are, minor or bigger. Hope things are better over in U.S. and Canada.

But the system (VNS) itself is really lovely. You will like it!!!

barry,
i thought i covered this question pretty well in my www.virtualtourist.com, member homepage=RichardBlaine. they will take as long as necessary. we spent most of the day there, did the factory tour, took the unofficial factory tour, ate lunch, took lots of pictures, wrote tons of postcards, used the internet connection and sent email, bought accessories, etc. etc.

have you read/looked at my virtualtourist write-up??? most of the questions you ask i have answered, with pictures at the site?http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

My goodness Richard, you have done a great work. Very nice to read about your Volvo Overseas Delivery and European Adventure, should come in handy for plenty of people that have an upcoming overseas delivery. And by the way plenty of nice photos.

Cheers http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes I have and it's very impressive and I've learned a great deal from it. THANK you for spending all the time assembling and reporting on your FDC experience -- and yes many of my questions have been answered by your report.

What's more rewarding is your continued attention to replying to people here who are about to pickup there XC70s at the FDC -- much appreciated.
