I'm part way through the customization of a new forum system (phpbb.com) which will lead to much faster response times, uesful new features, and a somewhat freshened look.

Also, I'm done that, I'll be installing a new version of the photo gallery software which was just released a week or so ago. Has a number of new features I've been waiting for, such as a search function, and the ability to set categories of galleries. This will now allow me to finally build out the XC90 and official Volvo press photos of the V70XC.

Minor to you maybe, but I'm stoked! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I think this website is already one of the best around!
That goes for both the setup, the content as the audience it attracts http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Thanks Taylor!!!!

I couldn`t agree more.

Agree with all of the above + more coastal! Your work is very, VERY much appreciated!! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Thinking about a BB for a site I run and maybe even moving the site to php (currently written in ColdFusion) next year. So I'm very anxious to see how yours looks and works. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Thanks very much for the comments guys!

I'm now about 80% complete on the new photo gallery software, just need to tweak a few settings and give it that VolvoXC.com look.

Wiz, phpbb is supposedly the best, and probably the most popular, Open Source message board around these days. Ikonboard has served us very well, but they don't have a PHP version and with growth, as you've noticed, server usage has become a problem.

You might also want to take a look at InvisionBoard. It's a good free one too, from what I hear written by the guys who started Ikonboard. I'm going with PHPBB mainly because of it's popularity and the hacks available for extending it's functionality.

For paid boards, I've heard good things about vBulletin too. Tried UBB a long time ago but was again pretty server hungry at the time.

Only reason I've waited for so long in converting to PHPBB is that I wasn't aware of a database convertor from IB to PHPBB. But finally found one a few days ago so the upgrade is now a go! Let me know if you need a hand installing and/or configuring your board. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

What's up with the "Most Viewed" Volvo Engine Plate pic -- it looks broken http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/exclamation.gif

There are a few like that. I had to remove the original upload files a while back to save on disk space, not realizing that when the original upload files were smaller than the system's default image width, it just used the original.

Hence, images originally uploaded smaller than 400 pixels were deleted. I still have the originals on my local HD, just a matter of going through and uploading the small ones again.

Yes I like the new graphic too! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif Are you going to extend the nav bar color to the rest of the page or are you going to leave that until you change over to the new board software? (Hint, hint.) http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks for the comments on the new graphics guys...
Still want to play with them a bit but they're close to final.:)

The forum upgrades are coming very soon too, I just need to install a few more mods to the base installation of PHPBB. Then the task of finding time to shut the forums, download and convert the files and reupload. Sounds like an easy task but there are thousands of files and the conversion itself is a bit of a trick. I've tried it once before with some success, but I'm sort of hoping the convertor's developer will come up with a better solution. There's a ton of info here and I really don't want to open the new boards, then continue our discuissions on the new database only to realize there's a serious problem.

I've got a super busy week coming up, so hope to get this up and done by late next weekend, http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Taylor:

Take your time and don't rush the conversion. Is there any way to phase the conversion in simple and reversible steps ? (just a thought)

Good luck with it all. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Maybe Low Tide could beta test it with some new elusive pics. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I guess it won't be long before we see the forums and photo gallery getting the same treatment. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Just kidding...I know work has been pretty intense for you lately. Please add my appreciation to the list.

The difference between “people who own the same car” and a “community” is communication. Your work gives us the ability to help each other, get to know each other, and build a community that spans the globe. Forgive me if I appear to be waxing philosophic about a car web site, but I think you’ve created more than that. There was a time when I noticed other XCs. Now I wave at other XC drivers, knowing they might be compatriots from this site. That’s a neat thing and your work has made it possible. Thanks.

Thanks again for all the positive comments guys and I really do agree with the fact that we've not only been able to create a quality community of XC enthusiasts, but also a strong, friendly community of like-minded, courteous and helpful people from all over the world.

If you ever have the chance to attend one of the XC gatherings you'll fully appreciate and understand what I mean, as this community isn't JUST about the cars but also a community of great people whom just so happen to own very similar vehicles. :)
