OK, barring any strong objections from the majority, here's what we've decided on thus far. I've embellished a few of the details as I've come up with a couple interesting ideas. Well, at least I think they're interesting http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

June 14-15, 2003
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

June 14, Morning: meet at an agreeable location in West Vancouver at, say 9am (perhaps earlier). Drive to Squamish and assuming North Coast XC is starting the day Squamish, pick him up along the way up to Whistler. Lunch in Whistler around 11 or 12 where we meet with cbob, that is assuming he's meeting us en route and not starting in Vancouver.

June 14, Afternoon:After lunch we drive to Pemberton, then along the Hurley Pass Road around to Lillooet.

I have no idea what time we'll get into Lillooet, but here we give an option. For those who can only stay with us the day, they can return to Vancouver via the Duffey Lake Road, and I assume be back into the city at a reasonable hour.

The rest of us will spend the night in Lillooet (or maybe further along the road). We'll plan this ahead and make the appropriate reservations.

June 14, Evening
This will be pre-researched but find a location to dine/gather for the evening.
------------------------------------

June 15, Morning: do the breakfast thing wherever we end up, and drive down the #1 through Hope and back into the Lower Mainland.

June 15, Afternoon: Not sure what time we'll arrive back in the valley, but we'll probably have time to either have lunch or dinner at Domaine de Chaberton, a great winery located in Langley.

June 15, Evening: Since this day's afternoon is uncertain, I'm not sure what will happen here, though I'm sure we'll find something http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Sorry for all the unknowns at this point but I really want these decisions to be made as a group and not force feed ya http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

For those travelling from out of town, we could also extend the gathering to a dinner in Vancouver on the Friday evening, or Sunday upon our return. Also, think about convoying from your local regions. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Please give me your thoughts on what's been presented thus far, and I'll start forming a complete itinerary for the gathering.

Also, sounds like a few of us have been up the Hurley before. I haven't been before but will scout it out one weekend well in advance of the final date just to make sure there are no surprises, and to get a better idea on the time frame. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Sounds like a fun time. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

I'm going to be travelling a whole bunch around that time, but I'm certainly going to pencil this one into my calendar right now, and try to work around it. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

The folks with the OSD vehicles on order are going to have to do some fast "break in" milage to prep for this. Gee, what a chore! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Count me in -- it all sound jolly good fun to me.

As I'm but a few hours south of West Vancouver we can fit in with probably any plan you come up with for the Fri PM and weekend activities.

As we will be in our new car break-in period I can always trail in the rear so long as I know where y'all are heading http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Actually, now I come to think of it I'll probably be putting some 1000 to 1500 miles on the car touring about Sweden/Norway w/son so maybe the car will not need too much TLC. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Great to hear guys!

Barry, Art mentioned that he'll be bringing some decals along for the ride out from Alberta so we can affix one to the new ride then if you like. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Or even better, order one from him now and bring it along for placement in Sweden http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Art, I'll let you know if there's anything needed leading up, thanks for the offer!

Lookin forward to it!

The timing is seemingly good for us. We frequent B.C. (Sooke on Vancouver Island mostly) and do enjoy spending time every now and then in Vancouver. If you can firm-up the proposed dates soon then we can probably build a trip around it. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Sounds like there's no objections to the proposed dates, so it's settled, June 14-15, 2003 it is!

I'll start firming up some of the details over the weekend and plan on doing a dry run of the trip sometime in the Spring.

I've started getting ready already. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
There seemed to be some mysterious threading going on awhile back that had to do with a number of XCers blasting Queen music while driving, so I went out and got the 3 disk set : Best of Queen Vol I, Best of Queen Vol II, and of course Best of Queen Vol III. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif
I'm not sure what the effect on my driving is going to be, but I've already had to blast by to the right of a slowpoke fellow XCer who decided he was going quickly enough to hog one of the rare passing lanes on our busy See our Sky highway. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

I should explain to those ex-colonials who drive on the "British"
side of the road, that I'm notoriously intolerant of folks who drive that way here in CanuckLand. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Anyone have experience with driving the Hurley?

I've seen photos of the road and it looks fine, but do you think we'll have any problems as a group? Concerns I have are communications (cel phones work? Need to bring a CB?), cars kicking up gravel to those behind, etc...

Plus the distance is, from what I can tell, quite substantial at 150mi (is this correct?)... could get boring after a while for some. How long does the drive take?

I'm always up for adventure, but want to make sure everyone's comfortable with it.

The alternative would instead be to do the Duffey direct from Pemberton to Lillooet.

Here's the map again for reference: http://www.chilcotinholidays.com/images/mapcopy.jpg

barrysharp

Is it 150 miles of gravel/dirt road and would it be very bumpy. If this were so it could be a rough ride for passengers and may induce some form of sea sickness! If it's just a few miles (how many? maybe about 20-30 mile) of gravel/dirt then I'd say OK.

The route looks pretty interesting to me. I went out the other day to get a BC map and the portion of the route that's "Unimproved Road" is the section from Lillooet->Gold Bridge->Pemberton section. This measures about 160Km or some 100 miles -- if I'm reading the map scale correctly.

I also note that there's a shorter off-road section Lillooet->Shalalth->D'Arcy->Birken->Mount Currie that about 120Km or 75 miles. This section is described as "Summer Only for 4x4 vehicles"! Does this section make any sense?

Which way would you plan on taking out of Vancouver (clockwise/anti-clockwise) ?

Maybe we all meet at Hope or Lytton and drive around (anti-clockwise) to Vancouver -- or have you planned an overnight stay enroute somewhere?

Thanks for doing all this trip planning stuff.

Hmmm....I'm also up for a bit of offroad pursuit but 150 miles of it would make for a very long and dusty day. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sleeping.gif

Here are some approximate driving times according to the Chilcotin Holidays website:

Pemberton to Chilcotin Turnoff - 1.5 hrs
Chilcotin to Lillooet - 1.75 hrs
Total 3 hrs

I'll also bring along a couple of FRS radios to help out with communications. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I will have my FRS as well. We use them alot in California. And practically everyone I run around with has one. If you do not yet have one, be sure to get one with subcodes. It helps on cutting down the traffic.

As for the planned itinerary it sounds good to me. We ran 180 miles last year in Death Valley in 1 day. Sunrise to way past sunset. And then did another 150+ the next day. All of the roads were graded gravel except 1 trail up the side of a mountain (Lippencott Road) and the trail through Titus Canyon.

Is anyone coming up from California, Oregon or Washington? Maybe we could carvan across the border and freak out the Border Patrol with all of our XC's in mass exodus! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm actually in the process of writing a summary of the plans, and designing a mini-site to promote. I'll design a poster as well, printable in PDF. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

In my research I found the following links outlining distances, and pretty much the identical route we're planning, assuming we're not going to do the Hurley. First day would have us up to position #3 on the second map. Total distance looks to be around 370 KM for the two days.. not too shabby at all. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'm not sure what's there.

I should have been a bit clearer.. the linked maps show the route we're taking, not necessarily the same start and finish points.

I'll be updating with more exact details once I have MS Streets 2003. We'll probably be starting in West Vancouver at Park Royal, North end of the Lions' Gate Bridge, and the end location is open at this time, but somewhere in Vancouver would be expected.

Sorry I'm a bit late on developments. Been in Frozen Philly (no XCs spotted), and warm, sunny LA (no XCs spotted).
Wondering what I'm doing back here on the soggy Wet Coast.

The Hurley is nigh-on impassable in winter. I tried to get over it when stranded by an avalanch one autumn, and was turned back by the highways dept., even though I was driving one of those great go-anywhere Toyota pickups (the solid axel kind).
In summer it's dusty and rocky. It has been "improved" in the last couple of years, but I'm not keen to take my paintjob over the route. Last time I drove it in the summer, I left the truck in 4WD the whole way, simply because it was easier to keep the vehicle on line. It's a superb drive for scenery, if you are not in the middle of a cloud of dust.

I drive the Duffy Lake Road regularly. It's 1 hour from Whistler to Duffy Lake, and another hour to Lillooet. The Hurley route will be at least double that time, especially if we are going slow to avoid throwing too mutch gravel at the folks behind.

Since the least interesting portion of the "Duffy Lake Loop" would likely be the route up the freeway and over to Lillooet, I'd lobby for doing that portion first, doing lunch somewhere about the 1/2 way point, then cruising home through the great scenery from Hat Creek, through Duffy Lake, Joffre Lakes, and Mt. Curry to Whistler, where we can stop for "refreshments". If we have made a few stops along the way, this might turn out to be a dinner stop, or maybe we will want to do a meal in Horseshoe Bay, after a scenic evening drive along Howe Sound.
Another consideration for the "anti-clockwise" loop would be to avoid the 11% uphill grade to Joffre Lakes. It's much easier on the vehicle (and can be *more fun*) using those great 4 wheel disk brakes to come down the steep switchbacks.
I've had the pleasure. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

I think this kind of tour, while not as ambitious or "off road", might be a more do-able day trip for the average XCer.
If we want to make a full weekend of it, there are various locations, even camping facilities along the loop.

Barry,

Great idea about the poster, however, I'll probably leave this in Taylor's capable hands. Sounds like he's got a pretty good grasp of things at the moment. The mini site that he's creating should prove to be very beneficial.

I've also contacted my own dealership and they've come on board to donate merchandise/draw prizes for the event.

The list that I posted earlier, was drafted from all those who expressed an interest in attending. I really can't say whether or not all of these members will actually be able to schedule time off for this event. Since the meet is still 4 months away, I'm certainly hopeful we can get a better idea of just how many are willing to commit. Since this is only our second official meet, the thought of a convoy of 20 + XC's really never occurred to me. Nonetheless, the more the merrier has been my motto all along. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

News updates, when they happen... here on VolvoXC.com.

I'm just finishing off the prelimiary itinerary for the event but not quite ready to make public as I want to work on a few more details.

Picked up Microsoft Streets 2003 today (excellent program BTW&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and have generated the following map.

Total drive distance for the weekend is a reasonable 595km (~370mi), which could leave us enough time to maybe take a back and forth detour off road if we're up to it, like Birkenhead or Anderson Lake.

A suggestion!

Back in my rallye days we always made a small metal plaque (1"x2" thereabouts) that had a design of the Rallye Masters choosing and the Meet date. I collected these over the years.

On one rallye someone took a pic of my wife and me hammering/skidding/flying around a bend on a dirt road. I had the pic enlarged to a fair size and have stuck all the little metal plaques around the edge as a reminder of all the fun we had on t5hese meets.

Maybe the volvoXC.com Meet plaques could be used in a similar manner http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'd be more than happy to chip a few $s to help out with this.

coastal/Taylor:

Some questions.

1) Dog accommodation
At the mid point (ie Sat night) are there any Hotels/B&B/Motels etc available that you can recommend that will accommodate pets-dogs http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ? I have two Fox Terriers who love a weekend jaunt such as this. I'm happy to travel a few extra miles from the mid point you've planned to get to a place that will house the dogs overnight. Mind you, I'd rather stay where everyone else will be. Send me private Email if you wish. I will also start reseaching for places myself but any advice would be appreciated. If the dogs pose a problem wrt overnight accommodations I will simply beg one of my daughters to mind our house over the weekend. The other daughter may very well want to come to Canada with us as she will always take any opportunity to visit Vancouver (she's shoe mad).

BTW I'm assuming Canada requires dogs to have had Rabies shots and proof of this via a tag etc. Is this correct?

2) Canadian GST Refunds
Having just returned from Sweden/Norway and being rewarded with a fat VAT refund on some purchases, I'm wondering if the same can be done when returning from Canada wrt the Canadian GST paid on purchases. I've bought books over the Internet from Candian publishers and they have always removed the GST for me. Do you have any personal info on what docs need to be obtained at time of purchase and is there a GST Refund office at the Canada/US border where one submits the GST refund claims.

3)
Are there things that aren't that obvious to most people that shouldn't be brought into Canada ? I know fruits etc aren't allowed.

4)
With today's heightened border security is a US driver's license sufficient to enter/exit Canada ? Should one carry a US Passport as well? What about US Resident Aliens with Green cards?

5)
Is there a good web site that address some of the above ?

Thanks and we are looking forward to the June 14/15 weekend. All I can say is that the boat (Jinsei Maru) bringing my XC70 home to us from Goteborg better make port Hueneme on time as promised on the Auto Shipment Order.

Have just realised our XC70 ships out from Goteborg TODAY as a "Used dirty travel stained" vehicle as stated on the shipping order http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Barry,

Here is the link (http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/customs/individuals/visitors-e.html) to the Canada Customs Visitor's site where you should find all of the information required to answer your questions.

Good Luck! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Taylor/Barry,

Here is a listing of accommodations that the group may wish to consider for the overnight stay in Lillooet.

Lillooet Accommodations (http://www.lillooeticefest.ca/accommodations.htm)

I know for certain that the Mile-0-Motel and The Retasket Springs Resort will accept pets. I'll report back over the next few days regarding group rates, amenities, etc.. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
