I have an 04 XC90 D5 which has just done 3500 miles.  I asked the Volvo Dealer to look at the MPG as I am averaging about 24 even if I drive very conservativly.

The dealer has told me to reset the computer on each trip and sure enough it goes up to around 28 initially and then reduces.

Interested to hear from other people with concerns about the MPG.  This is a diesel afterall and I had hoped for the 32 touch - guess I need to push it into neutral going down hills !

After 2500 miles I am averaging 23 to 25 mpg each trip with a 2004 D5 Exec.  NOT quite the mileage I was led to believe.  Still - what a ride!

I tried an XC90 loan car diesel + tiptronic transmission.

Quite frankly this was one of the most dangerous cars I have driven in a long time. 0 to 30 mph in just over 5 seconds. No pull at all below 1900 rpm. So coming out of junctions extreme car is needed as it takes for ever for the turbo lag to end, and it to reach 15 mph. Even worse is entering busy roundabouts.

Otherwise a great car, but compared to my 2.4 T auto V70XC a horrid experience and my car does 27 mpg average whist the XC90 D5 only struggled to get 24 mpg!!!!

My XC90D5 is running 27 mpg. I don't feel this is too bad. I also drive a S60D5 which runs 31 mpg. Given the difference in weight and height I am okay with it.

I agree this car do take it's time to get off the mark. Might be a bit dangerous as rojah the boggah suggests. It's times when you pull out form a junction and it's a slow pull!!!!

I have had my D5 Xc90 for a month and have filled up 3 times averaging around 340 miles on a tank of Diesel!! Is that about right??? Bit dissappointing when the D5 S60 does over 600 miles on a tank.
Anyone got any thoughts about the above?

My D5 averages about 27-28 after 3000 miles

I had concerns regarding the slow acceleration at junctions. My dealer explained that Volvo program the gearbox to change into neutral when stopped to reduce the emissions. Volvo have a software fix that helps the slow response.
Has anyone else tried this route or is it sales flannel?

Ours is averaging about 27, which i dont think is too bad for a 2ton vehicle.
Mind you, im pleased that i dont have the T6.

Chippy I am having the same problem and the dealer in Belgium blagged me off on it. I am taking the car into the dealer in theUK to have a look as I was going to overtake another parked vehicle I was slowing down waiting for car on other side of road to pass after he had gone i pulled out to pass the car and then there was a massive pause with no acceleration and a big truck comign. My foot was flat to the floor after the huge pause the car then roared of. Kind of filled my pants a bit

I average 24mpg but I expected more ! Mind you coming form a Freelander V6 Auto nothing you did would get that vehicle over 18MPG (SORE)
I have posted threads befor as to my concerns about the acceleration (or lack of it). My Volvo dealer (in Scotland) has had the car in twice for software upgrades, Have you all had this carried out ? cant say I notice any difference. All the performance chip manufacturers I have spoken to say chipping will not help from a standing start and only benefits from 2500rpm. I would welcome any comments. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I'm concerned to read these messages having just placed an order here in Belgium for a 2005 D5 with the manual transmission - from what I read the accelleration issues seem to be associated with the programming of the automatic gearbox - has anyone with a manual D5 XC90 experienced any similar problems? My test drive of the D5 with a manual gearbox was satisfactory (I'm trading a 2002 Saab Aero Cabriolet which has been lovingly "massaged" to perform). I'm ready to expect slower times off the mark but not the kind of hesitancy some of your have described.

As for the fuel mileage - 24 MPG would be fine with me after three years of filling up with 98 Octane unleaded - both my driving style and the engine in the Saab made for poor fuel economy. Shame the tank of the D5 is so small though (smaller than the T6) - I've read that this gives it a range of about 450 Km per tankful. AutoMagazine - the Belgian reviewer found a fuel economy on the D5 with the automatic gearbox of 11,8/100km and needs 34,5 seconds to cover a kilometer from a standing start.

Don't worry. The manual d5 doesn't have this acceleration issue. In general, the manual makes the D5 a more driveable car anyway. The 163bhp engine power can't afford a loss due the automatic gearboxes. Anyone making a testdrive must have noticed this.

Hi Botanique,

I got my D5 Manual in October also in Brussels, and no lag problems at all like the automatic gearbox versions. I really think that manual is the best choice for the D5 engine since it allows you to get the best performance from it. In addition the 6 gears box provides a very reasonable fuel economy. I have almost 3.000 km and average consumption is 10.1 l/100 km. in mostly urban cycle. When I drove in highway at 130-135 km/h the average inmediately goes below 9 l/100km. I think this is very good for a 2tns car. My old Mondeo 1.8 TD was never below8-9 l/100km.

I do not know how you are calculating, but mine XC90 with 13.000 km driven uses 10 liters diesel for driving 100 kilometers.

I get a steady 10.5l per 100Km from my '04 D5 auto after 10,000 km. Didn't seem to change much after the first oil change although it does feel a lot smoother. Have also had the aforementioned "pants filling" experience and have been repeatedly told by my dealer (in France) that nothing can be done. :(
